Sedway, Marvin

Marvin Sedway (1928-1990) was a Democratic member of the Nevada State Assembly from 1982 to 1990, and an optometrist in Las Vegas, Nevada for nearly forty years. Born in New York on July 24, 1928, he grew up in Las Vegas, where his father and his uncle, Moe Sedway, worked at the Flamingo. Marvin Sedway graduated from Las Vegas High School and the University of Nevada, Reno, and obtained his doctorate in optometry from the Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon. While he was a member of the Nevada Assembly, he served as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and the Interim Finance Committee, and served on the Commerce, Education, Health and Welfare, and Legislative Functions Committees. Sedway was known for his commitment to improving quality of life for disadvantaged and disenfranchised groups, and especially children. He was a strong supporter of education and in 2002 the Marvin M. Sedway Middle School was dedicated in his honor. Sedway died on July 7, 1990 at the age of 61.
