The new technologies of lighting, developed for theater and entertainment made its logical jump to the Las Vegas Strip where lighting design blends with and becomes architecture. Whether lighting the top of the Stratosphere Tower or the intimate atmosphere of an exclusive restaurant or bar, the designs of John Levy Lighting Productions has become a hallmark of the new themed visualization which turns mere structures and landscapes into iridescent light shows.
John Levy began his career in England, designing theatrical lighting for the London stage. He moved to California and began working for the Disney Studios translating stage lighting to themed entertainment. It was a natural step for Levy to be approached by Caesars Palace in Las Vegas to design the lighting for their new Forum shops which featured a domed skyscape that reflected the changing light of the passing day. The technical and creative innovations introduced by Levy and his design team have in a sense transformed the skyline of the Strip, from towering blocks with imposing entryways, porte cocheres and neon marquees, to an ever changing glimmer and glow of flowing colors: Martin Stern, Jr.’s grand entry to the original MGM Grand transformed by Brad Friedmutter and John Levy into Bally’s shimmering colonnade and pedestrian bridge of ever changing hues, and the now iconic lit tower of the Stratosphere that dominates the Las Vegas skyline.
