Golden Agila Lions Club Records

Abstract

The Golden Agila Lions Club Records (1996-2019) contain organizational and membership files for the Golden Agila Lions Club, a Filipino-American civic organization based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection includes information about chartering the organization as an official club and includes membership lists, newsletters, and records that document the Golden Agila Lions service and social activities. The collection includes newspaper clippings documenting the Golden Agila Lions Club and the Filipino community from various Las Vegas-based Filipino and Asian-American newspapers. Two issues of Today's Filipino Magazine from 2018 and 2019 are also included in this collection.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Patricia Iannuzzi conducted by Claytee D. White on March 6, 2018 and November 30, 2022 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In the first interview, Iannuzzi discusses her early interest in library sciences. She talks about her educational experience and becoming a reference librarian. Iannuzzi describes the development of resource repositories, education reform, and the evolution of the internet. Iannuzzi recalls the first online databases, electronic resources, and improving undergraduate education. Lastly, Iannuzzi discusses her employment at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the importance of information literacy. In the second interview, Iannuzzi discusses accomplishments from her time as Dean of UNLV University Libraries, particularly her role in the creation of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV.

Oral history interview with Judith Harriman and Mary Laub conducted by Stefani Evans on October 31, 2017 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Harriman and Laub discuss their early life and early interest in service organizations. They talk about the establishment of the Assistance League of Las Vegas (ALLV), organizing fundraisers, and philanthropic projects they were involved in. Harriman and Laub describe how ALLV has worked with school children in Las Vegas, the formation of Assiteens Auxiliary, and the formation of Desert Sage Auxiliary.

Oral history interview with Valma Alvarez von Holt conducted by Claytee D. White on February 06, 2018 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, von Holt discusses her early life and arriving to Pahrump, Nevada in 1994. She talks about her interest in amateur radio, raising horses, and purchasing forty acres of land. Von Holt recalls building a farm and her involvement in launching a local women’s group. Lastly, von Holt discusses the role women had during World War II and radio broadcasting during that time.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Ted Quirk conducted by Claytee D. White on December 15, 2017 and December 20, 2017 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In the first interview, Quirk discusses his early life in Ithaca, New York and arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1973. He talks about his employment at Shell Oil, working in a chemical plant, and oil drilling. Quirk describes practicing law for patents, licensing, and contracts. He talks about his career in the housing development industry, and his involvement in the development of the Spanish Trails County Club. In the second interview, Quirk talks about Boys and Girls Club of America and being involved with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He remembers forming the UNLV Golf Foundation, the Runnin’ Rebels Club, and the UNLV Research Foundation. Quirk explains the situation regarding UNLV’s Basketball Coach, Jerry Tarkanian, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Lastly, Quick discusses the historical importance of the Territorial Enterprise Newspaper's copyright case.

In this interview, Segerblom discusses her personal history living in Boulder City, Nevada after moving there in 1940. Segerblom discusses teaching in Boulder City, the school system, what life was like in Boulder City, and the story behind alcohol legalization in Boulder City, after it was prohibited. Segerblom also discusses Boulder City's growth, how some locals would prefer the town to remain small, the political system in Boulder City, and the relationship between Boulder City and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Oral history interview with Marguerite Segretti conducted by Tommy Rendano on February 24, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Segretti discusses her personal history and life in Las Vegas, Nevada. Segretti discusses her career as the Clark County Democratic Central Committee Chairman, a position which she was serving in at the time of the interview, and politics on the local and national level. Segretti describes how Las Vegas has changed and expanded, life in Las Vegas, and the presence of religion in Las Vegas. Segretti also discusses sex work and prostitution in Las Vegas and the rest of Nevada, as well as misconceptions people have about the city.
