Oral history interview with Kathryn Howell conducted by Joyce Marshall on March 21, 2003 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Howell discusses her early life in Texas and growing up on a ranch. She talks about her career as a teacher, teaching strategies she used, and the importance of classroom management.

Children and teachers stand outside the Goldfield Public School for a picture. Along the side of the photo reads: "Goldfield Public School - This building is of stone guarried from the stone quarry near Goldfield. Total cost, $20,000. Equipment of the class rooms, $5,000. There are five class rooms with a seating capacity of about 60 scholars to each room. Goldfield has a regular attendance of school children of 350. Board of Education. Mr. C. H. Beesley, President. Description

Daisy Lee Miller talks about being born and raised as an only child in Louisiana before moving to Las Vegas in her 20s. For a time, Daisy worked in the powder room at the California Club. It was while she was employed here that she realized she wanted something better, and she wanted to be a good example tor her kids. Daisy began attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to get her degree. Daisy is very proud of the fact that she graduated from UNLV at the same time that her daughter graduated from high school. Family has always been very important to Daisy, and she enjoyed spending time with her children while they were growing up. Sundays always found Daisy and her children at church while other leisure-time activities included trips to the lake or Mt. Charleston. While going to school, Daisy worked at the Economic Opportunity Board in the family planning program. Following graduation, Daisy began working for the Clark County School District where she rapidly advanced

Elsa, one of the original student interviewers for the Latinx Voices project, talks about her family, her Mexican-American roots, and her experience learning Spanish and English. She discusses her education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and her work as an interviewer with Latinx Voices before her graduation. Elsa also shares what it has been like entering the workforce as an elementary school teacher during the COVID-19 pandemic.
