Oral history interview with Leon Symanski conducted by Claytee D. White and Stefani Evans on July 23, 2024 for the Game On! The Oral History of Las Vegas Sports project. In this interview, Symanski, a three-time UNLV graduate, recalls his childhood in Southern California and his early relationship with sports. He recalls playing basketball in high school, college, and being recruited by UNLV coaches, who offered him a scholarship with a well-defined role as a backup player. He understood his role and played with the Runnin' Rebels two seasons (1984-87), including UNLV's second Final Four Team. In this interview, Symanski discusses the celebrity status the team enjoyed; coach Jerry Tarkanian's work ethic and method of teaching and preaching after every practice, coach Tim Grgurich's inspirational style, and the role a coach plays in a player's life. He talks about his ten years in hospitality that began with summer jobs at Paul-Son Gaming, working at the Tropicana and Luxor Hotels, before joining the first class at UNLV Boyd School of Law. Oral history interview with Maxine and Jack Cason conducted by Claytee D. White and Stefani Evans on September 22, 1016 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Jack discusses his early life in Oklahoma and arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1950. He recalls the formation of Saveway Super Service, Philips 66 service stations, the competition in the fuel industry, and the opening of the first Rebel service station. Jack talks about fuel terminals, fuel bulk plants, and becoming one of the largest fuel providers in southern Nevada. Later, Maxine and Jack talk about supporting local sports organizations. Lastly, Jack discusses his involvement in the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) Athletics Department, and being inducted into the UNLV Sports Hall of Fame.
Oral history interview with David Pearl conducted by Joseph A. Hawk on March 14, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Pearl begins by describing life in Las Vegas, Nevada and how it has changed since the 1940s. Pearl discusses his history organizing community sports events, as well as organizing a game with the national Russian basketball team and other exhibition events for American sports teams. He then talks about his career as the executive director of the Runnin' Rebels Club at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and how he raised money for the athletics department. Pearl also talks about his other jobs, his interest in athletics, being a referee for boxing matches, and the Helldorado Parades.
