Description

Hughes' aircraft (the XF-11) sitting on the tarmac before its first test flight in Culver City, California in April of 1947. Newspaper clipping taped to the back of the image reads: "#11, Long-Range Plane Completed. Culver City, Calif. -- The new Hughes XF-11 is a very fast photographic plane with a ceiling of more than 40,000 feet. It has a pressurized cabin, making it unnecessary for the crew to use oxygen masks. It is shown here before it made its first test flight."

The Las Vegas Land and Water Company provided the water district with an inventory a year before, but no buyers made an offer yet. The letter is an account of a meeting to discuss further details of the proposed purchase. "8011-- 174-2 80-Gen." written in red pencil at head of the letter.

Reno Gay Rodeo Collection

Abstract

The Reno Gay Rodeo Collection comprises organizational records collected by Dennis McBride that document the National Reno Gay Rodeo from 1977 to 1988. It includes newspaper clippings, notes, and ephemera, as well as legal documentation from two lawsuits fought unsuccessfully in 1988 to retain the Reno rodeo. The two lawsuits were the Silver State Gay Rodeo Association vs Lawlor Events Center (1988), and the Lantry, et. al. vs Third Judicial District Court, NV (Nevada Supreme Court dismissal, 1988).

Abstract

The Barbara Tabach Papers (1978-2022) mainly contain project files kept by oral historian Barbara Tabach throughout her experiences managing different oral history community documentation projects for the Oral History Research Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) from 2010 to 2022. Oral history projects represented in this collection include Documenting the African American Experience in Las Vegas, Nevada, Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project, Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada, Remembering 1 October, and The Great Pause: Las Vegas Chronicles of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The majority of the collection represents Tabach's involvement as project manager for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Other materials include correspondence, newspaper clippings, event invitations, interview questions, memorabilia and books gifted to Tabach from oral history narrators, and publicity for the projects.

Kiel Ranch Preservation Committee Records

Abstract

The Kiel Ranch Preservation Committee Records (1973-2005) document the activities of the North Las Vegas Bicentennial Committee (1973-1976) and its successor, the Advisory Board for Kiel Ranch (1978-1995), in their efforts to restore Kiel Ranch, one of the earliest non-indigenous settlement sites in the Las Vegas, Nevada area. The collection contains various official reports on Kiel Ranch, proposals on how to restore Kiel Ranch, chronological files for each year of the project, and newspaper clippings on the status of Kiel Ranch.

The Claudine Williams Papers (1956-2009) contain awards, contracts, personal and business correspondence, newspaper clippings, and photographs pertaining to Las Vegas, Nevada businesswoman and philanthropist, Claudine Williams. The collection also includes extensive information on her hotel and gaming properties, including the Silver Slipper Gambling Hall, Holiday Casino, and Harrah's Hotel and Casino, as well as her honorary doctoral degree, medals, and audiovisual materials of interviews, news reports, and events.

Barbara Tabach Collection on the New Frontier Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas

Abstract

The collection contains material collected by Barbara Tabach to document the final days of the New Frontier Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada (2007). Included are brief oral history audio recordings and transcripts for approximately 50 individuals wo worked at or were customers of the New Frontier, as well as over 650 digital photographs of the people and the building. Also included is a digital video of the November 2007 implosion and a Las Vegas Sun newspaper clipping from September 1961 on the New Frontier.
