Williams, Edith J. Crawford, 1888-1967

Edith J. Crawford Williams was born April 17, 1888 in Rygate, Vermont. She was married to Nevada State Assemblyman and University of Nevada Board of Regents member Frank Williams. Williams died December 1967.

Scope and Contents

The visual materials series (1927-1991) contains photographs and transparencies of places such as Las Vegas, Nevada; the Hoover Dam; Sedona, Arizona; Oberlin, Ohio; and other states Robert Woodruff traveled to during cross-country road trips. The material documents city scenes, community events, landscapes and animal life, national and state parks, and Woodruff's family. Cities and places around Nevada include Goodsprings, Tonopah, Rhyolite, Boulder City, Mount Charleston, Valley of Fire, and Death Valley. Events pictured include Henderson's Industrial Days, Helldorado, and the construction of the Hoover Dam. Materials are comprised of formats including 4x5 photographic prints; 35 mm, 120 mm, and 4x5 negative and positive transparencies; and 35 mm and 120 mm projection slides. The series also contains audio reels, a cassette tape, two early cameras, and a slide viewer.

Description

On March 8, 1980, Gary Wood interviewed Carl Ciliax (born 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada) about his experiences living in Nevada. Ciliax first describes his family history, his early interests in wildlife, and his background and education in artwork. Ciliax then discusses his early experiences in hunting and his eventual interest in conservationism and preservation, including his involvement with organizations that sought the protection of desert bighorn sheep and the protection of wildlife in general. The two talk more about wildlife, the early development of Las Vegas, and the effects of the atomic testing. The interview concludes with Ciliax’s recollection of recreational activities and some of his thoughts on conservationism.

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Single Item Accession Photograph Collection (approximately 1869-1999) contains photographs, postcards, negatives, and slides primarily pertaining to Southern Nevada, with a focus on Las Vegas, Nevada, collected by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas University Libraries, Special Collections and Archives. The collection primarily includes images of early Las Vegas, hotels and casinos along Fremont Street and the Strip, railroad infrastructure, local businesses, and residential neighborhoods. Also included are images of Hoover (Boulder) Dam's construction, MX Missile testing, Nevada mining camps, and the natural desert environment. Other images depict towns throughout Nevada including Boulder City, Henderson, Reno, Luning, Tonopah, Goodsprings, Delmar, Beatty, Panaca, Overton, Caliente, Logandale, and Aurora.
