Abstract

Oral history interviews with Elizabeth von Till Warren conducted by Claytee D. White and Ashley Guthre on July 07, 2010 and November 18, 2011 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In her first interview, Warren describes living in Freeport, Long Island and her education in anthropology. She talks about her involvement in preserving historical sites in Goodsprings, Nevada and discusses the significance of these sites. In her second interview, Warren describes voluntary desegregation in Clark County schools and her experience working with the Clark County Schools’ Professional Growth Services. She then explains her employment at Clark County Community College and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and doing preservation work in the Desert Research Institute (DRI) Museum. Lastly, Warren discusses Rails to Trails, a program that manages old railroad beds, and her employment for the Southern Nevada Historical Society, the Preservation Association of Clark County, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Abstract

The James H. Down Jr. Photograph Collection (approximately 1915-1940) consists of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives, as well as color photographic slides and postcards. The images depict scenes in and around Las Vegas and Goodsprings, Nevada. Also included are Glenn Davis' photographs of the Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam), Black Canyon, the Colorado River, and Lake Mead. Most of the images portray the construction phases of the Hoover Dam.

Description

On March 2, 1977, collector Connie Boich interviewed Betty (born March 31, 1919 in Bisbee, Arizona) and Gus Ciliax (born May 13, 1909 in Michigan) in the Ciliax home in Las Vegas, Nevada. This interview covers Southern Nevada and early development of the area. During the interview, they also discussed local recreation, prostitution, Block 16, and various social activities, in addition to local businesses, such as Six Companies, the economy, Boulder Dam, and education in Nevada.

Description

On March 20, 1977, Jackie Ogden interviewed Irene Doty (born 1914 in Dangerfield, Texas) about her life in Southern Nevada. Doty first talks about the first casino properties and restaurants in Las Vegas along with some of the other businesses and operations of the area. She also describes some of her experiences as a justice of the peace, conditions during World War II, and the clothing fashion of the time. Doty also talks about some of her experiences in Goodsprings, Nevada, and about her experiences as a juror and potential juror in several murder trials. The interview concludes with a discussion on housing development and gambling in Las Vegas.
