Description

Patrick Kiser interviews Patricia Deverell (b. 1929) in her home about her experiences while growing up in Nevada after arriving in 1937. Patricia discusses the various population and climate changes that she has witnessed, as well as major events such as the above-ground atomic testing. Patricia also mentions her occupation in the gaming industry and describes some of those changes over time.

Abstract

The William N. Thompson Photographic Slide Collection (approximately 1955-2002) consists of color photographic slides of gaming establishments in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In addition to images depicting the interior and exterior of casinos, the photographs also include maps showing legal gambling in different regions, and images of brothels, racetracks, hotels, in the United States and internationally.

Benjamin F. Smith Papers

Abstract

The Benjamin F. Smith Papers, dated from 1960 to 1969, contains a photocopy of a typed manuscript written by Benjamin F. Smith titled "Lady Luck and I." The manuscript details Smith's life, and focuses mainly on his time in Las Vegas, Nevada and his gambling strategies. The manuscript also contains gambling plays, figures, and charts. The collection also contains photocopied newspaper clippings and a brief biography of Smith written by Larry Evans.

Oral history interview with John R. Shown conducted by Robert E. Pilgreen on March 18, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Shown discusses his personal history living in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1953. Shown then describes casinos that were built during his lifetime, and recalls the development of the Las Vegas Strip. Shown then discusses gambling, and the effect that gambling has on the Las Vegas economy.

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Gaming Research Files is a collection of materials that date between approximately 1900 and 2019. The collection mainly consists of materials relating to conferences and expositions, gaming research files, and gaming technology and equipment catalogs. The conference and exposition materials include registration books, pamphlets, and printouts. The gaming research contains annual reports from different casinos and universities, as well as newspaper clippings and website printouts. The subject files are organized by state or international location, and contain clippings, printouts, and pamphlets related to different aspects of gaming. Gaming technology companies, software, and equipment catalogs are also found within the collection. The collection also contains DVDs, tapes, and several books on gaming practices as well as newspaper clippings, brochures, and documents related to problem gambling.

Collection is comprised of blackjack odds analyzing and strategy software manuals and software created primarily by Real World Casino and Stanford Wong (pen name of gambling author, John Ferguson) from approximately 1992 to 1996. The manuals and software in this collection are intended primarily for expert blackjack players to analyze real world effects of the game and to allow users to generate strategies for a specific game.

Chip Chat Newsletters and Catalogues

Abstract

The Chip Chat Newsletters and Catalogues date from 1994 to 2011 and contain Chip Chat issues 1, 2, and 4 through 49. Chip Chat was a newsletter produced by Douglas Saito and circulated throughout the gambling chip collectors' community. The newsletters were self-published by Saito. Generally three copies were produced a year, in some years there was more content, in others less. The newsletters focused on selling chips between collectors, tips for becoming a sucessful collector, the history of chips, and the state of the hobby.
