Description

Local news segments on the Stardust's "old-time gambling museum" which houses a $3 million dollar collection put together by Boyd Gaming and part of a larger renovation. First segment interviews Ralph Purnell, Stardust General Manager, who explains why the museum was put together as a new attraction, comparing it to Imperial Palace's car collection. In the second segment, Sam Boyd is seen leading the first tour through the museum. A brief history is provided on gaming and gambling, while stills of early Las Vegas are shown. Purnell speaks again on why the museum was created. The third segment the interior of the museum and artifacts around the museum. Interview with E. J. Cummins talks about hiding these artifacts while it was illegal, and the reporter speaks with historians about various early gaming machines. Bill Friedman giving a gaming demonstration. He was a professor for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' College of Hotel Administration for a decade and then went on to simultaneously be the president of Castaways Hotel and Casino and the Silver Slipper Casino in Las Vegas. Friedman is currently the president of Friedman management Group.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Evelyn and J.C. Gamble conducted by Claytee D. White on August 31, 2010 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Evelyn discusses living on the Westside in the 1950s and describes the development of that area. J.C. recalls his years in the United States Air Force and experiences stationed at Nellis Air Force Base. Lastly, J.C. describes why the Westside was off limits for active Air Force members, and the two speak about their employment at the Nevada Test Site.

Abstract

The Rena Nora Papers on Gambling Addiction (1978-2009) consist of the personal correspondence, research notes, and publications of psychiatrist Rena Nora. In addition to positions in New Jersey and New York, Dr. Nora was the Chief of Psychiatric Services at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she focused on issues of compulsive gambling. The papers also house several compact disks which contain presentations that Dr. Nora gave at various conferences on problem gambling in the United States.
