Description

Oral history interview with Dr. Linda K. Miller conducted by Claytee D. White on July 10, 2019 for Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Dr. Miller discusses her early life in Kansas City, Kansas and arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2002. She talks about Helen J. Stewart, the Old Mormon Fort, and the significance of that area. Later, Dr. Miller explains the importance of teaching local history to people in Las Vegas. Lastly, Dr. Miller discusses the process of writing a book about Helen J. Stewart.

Abstract

Oral history interview with James Perkins conducted by Janel Houldsworth on June 22, 2005 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Perkins reflects upon his career as a teacher and administrator with Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD). He describes the process by which he chose to pursue special education, and eventually became a teacher and administrator at several elementary and special education schools throughout the school district. He discusses issues such as student and staff diversity, and his interactions with Native American students through the development of Ute V. Perkins Elementary School in Moapa, Nevada. He also describes his approach to school administration, and his daily routine as a principal.

Taylor recalls the 1984 Culinary Workers Union Local 226 citywide strike for improved health coverage for employees. He also talks about the history of the labor union, its leadership, and the union representative structure giving a larger voice to the racially diverse workforce in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Abstract

Oral history interview with J. A. Tiberti conducted by Terry Mowbray on February 23, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Tiberti discusses his personal history before arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1941 as a civil engineer for Nellis Air Force Base. Tiberti recalls the plane crash involving Carole Lombard in 1942 and describes his work in assisting to locate the plane. He then discusses the construction projects he worked on and environmental changes around Las Vegas. Lastly, Tiberti describes his construction company, J. A. Tiberti Construction.

Abstract

The UNLV History 117: Nevada History Photograph Collection contains photographic prints, negatives, and slides of Las Vegas and Boulder City, Nevada between approximately 1900 and 1959. These images were collected by students for University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) professor Ralph Roske’s class, History 117: Nevada History. The images primarily depict Las Vegas in the 1950s with people posing in front of and inside the El Rancho Vegas and the Last Frontier Village, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Joe E. Lewis, and Paul Newman. Earlier photographs from the 1920s include businesses, such as fireproofing stores, and significant individuals such as Ed W. Clark. Lastly, it contains two photographs of the Boulder City Airport.
