Abstract

The Mollie Gregory Collection of Oral Histories contains audio interviews and brief transcripts that focus on welfare, family, and women's issues in Nevada from 1970 to 1974. Gregory interviewed Nevada residents including Maya Miller, Ruby Duncan, and Mary Wesley, who described their lives during the anti-poverty and women's rights campaigns in the early 1970s. The collection documents views on welfare; the Equal Rights Amendment; race, discrimination, and civil rights; and political campaigns.

Abstract

The International Food Service Executive Association (IFSEA) Records contain the organizational records from the IFSEA dating from 1916 to 2010. Included are meeting programs and minutes, menus, conference reports and proceedings, financial reports, newsletters, award certificates, scrapbooks, and stewards and caterers records focusing on the hospitality and food service industry. Materials are from both national and regional branches of the organization and include records from the United States military, with whom IFSEA has partnered with since the 1960s. Club artifacts and trophies are also contained in the collection.

Description

Black and white photo taken by C. P. Squires on the occasion of planting the first tree in the courthouse park, Las Vegas, Nevada. Date, March 1911, as near as can be fixed. The building shown at left is the first Clark County Court House (now used for Las Vegas City Library) which had been constructed by popular subscription by Las Vegas Business men as promised by them during the county division campaign in 1908-1909. This building provided sufficient quarters for the county offices for five years, following which, the present court house was built. Persons shown, so far as their identity can be remembered are: holding the tree- Ed W. Clark and using the shovel is Judge E. J. L Taber. Others, left to right: Charlie Ronnow, Judge W. R. Thomas, unidentified, unidentified, Bob Dillon, Frank A. Stevens, Harley A. Harmon, and Dr. Roy W. Martin.

Description

Dr. Thomas Holder grew up in San Diego, completed graduate work at the University of Washington, and then spent a year in Europe painting. Upon returning to the States, he checked out job opportunities in Las Vegas and San Diego. The chance to build a program from scratch appealed to him and he settled at UNLV in 1971. Tom has seen many changes in the university, the art program, and the city itself. He has encouraged students to show their work in various venues around Las Vegas and is always searching out new places to exhibit. In addition to staying current with his own work, Tom supports First Friday and a visiting artist program. To ensure quality education for Nevada students and to encourage enrollment at UNLV, he oversees a new project called "August in the Schools". Faculty members go out into the area high schools to speak about the art program and invite the students to attend Today, Dr. Holder is chairing the art department, works on a self-study of the department for the purpose of accreditation with the Nat'l Association of Schools of Art and Design, and continues with his own artistic endeavors. He plans to travel with his family as well.

On March 27, 1977, Frank Murillo interviewed housewife Marian Beltran Decaro (born September 7th, 1914 in Flagstaff, Arizona) in her home in Las Vegas, Nevada. This interview covers the history of Las Vegas, Nevada’s first Mexican restaurant. Mr. Decaro is also present during the interview. Additionally, Mrs. Decaro recalls the first atomic bomb test in Las Vegas and also offers an overview of the growth of the area, overall, including the development and demographic details of such distinct historical communities as the Westside.

Description

On February 17, 1976, Jeannette Lonpergan interviewed well driller and dairy worker, Mr. Louis Evans (born on August 8th, 1914 in Jones County, Iowa) in his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mrs. Lonpergan’s husband, Mr. Dennis Lonpergan, was present during the interview and joined in on the discussion. Mr. Louis Evans’ wife, Mrs. Evans, was also present during the interview. Mr. Evans relocated to Nevada from Iowa in search of employment. Construction on the Hoover Dam had begun at this point; Mr. and Mrs. Evans recall their earliest recollections of Nellis Air Force Base and McCarran Airport. The interview covers the history of Nevada from Mr. Evans’ perspective. Mr. Evans discusses the paving of roads, employment, religious activities, housing developments, early above ground atomic tests, social and environmental changes and mining in Nevada.
