Abstract

The Charles J. Hirsch Papers (1952-1987) contain gaming reports and net-recovery percentages from the Golden Nugget Casino from 1952 to 1967, the Sands Hotel and Casino in 1965 and 1975, the Landmark Hotel and Casino in 1975 to 1976, and the New Frontier Hotel and Casino in 1973 to 1975. Also included are American Society for Quality Control (ASQC) conference materials, speeches given by Hirsch, correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, and surveys.

Abstract

The Charles Aplin Photograph Collection (approximately 1935-1955) consists of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives. The images primarily depict the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Las Vegas, Nevada chapter events and members. Also included are images of Las Vegas, Helldorado parades, and Conrad H. Mann, former president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Abstract

The papers are comprised of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) professor Barbara Cloud's records dating from 1983 to 2008 and the Communications Studies Department "University Focus" radio program audio tapes. The records include research Barbara Cloud conducted while a professor in the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs including: women journalists, women newspaper writers, women editors, women and men in the media, and the role of newspapers in the American west. The materials also include information about lectures Professor Cloud gave. The records provide an overview about the type of research and work Professor Cloud was engaged with while teaching journalism at UNLV.

Description

Born on August 22, 1935, Harriet spent her childhood years in the segregated southern cities of St. Petersburg, Florida and Mobile, Alabama. Daughter to a blue collar plumber, who was also a union organizer and ‘rabid Democrat,’ Harriet recalls her father saying, “Remember children, you know what meat tastes like because there’s a man named Franklin Roosevelt.” Unsurprisingly, she grew up thinking Roosevelt was God. With her mother’s sudden death at age thirty-one from a cerebral hemorrhage, ten year old Harriet spent two years at a boarding school before rejoining her younger brother at her maternal grandparents in St. Petersburg. Florida. During this time, her father also based out of the grandparents’ home while following big construction work opportunities at various cities. In 1948, sixteen-year-old Harriet accompanied her father, an Alabama Delegate, to the Democratic National Convention.
