Abstract

Oral history interview with Gary Sternberg, Joe Lupo, and Ed Birch conducted by Barbara Tabach on August 21, 2017 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Lupo and Birch discuss their upbringing in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sternberg discusses his early life and arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1969. Sternberg and Birch talk about the gaming industry, becoming casino dealers, and changes in customer service in Las Vegas. Lupo describes the airline industry during the 1970s, and the growth of McCarran International Airport. Lastly, Sternberg, Lupo, and Birch discuss changes in Las Vegas.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Valma Alvarez von Holt conducted by Claytee D. White on February 06, 2018 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, von Holt discusses her early life and arriving to Pahrump, Nevada in 1994. She talks about her interest in amateur radio, raising horses, and purchasing forty acres of land. Von Holt recalls building a farm and her involvement in launching a local women’s group. Lastly, von Holt discusses the role women had during World War II and radio broadcasting during that time.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Esther Langston conducted by Claytee D. White on February 22, 2005 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. In this interview, Langston provides an overview of her early life and career in social work. She describes how the women in her family are positive and empowering role models. Langston moves on to explain how she become a social worker over a period of many years. She states that a job experience that helped her gain the qualifications of a social worker was working as an office manager at the Nevada Test Site. She also mentions how she has had to work with conflicts such as racial inequalities.

Part of the collection documents the entire 19 mile length of the north/south Eastern Avenue / Civic Center Drive alignment. Following the October 1, 2017 killing of 58 people at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival on the Las Vegas Strip, the Las Vegas community responded in a variety of ways. To honor the second anniversary of the shooting, various items were left at the site.

The George Knox Roth Collection (1959-1980) consists of newspaper clippings (including photocopies), magazine articles, newsletters, technical reports and publications, correspondence, notes, and photographs relating to the Atomic Energy Commission, the environmental impact of nuclear testing in Nevada, Nevada mining, Airwest and the Hughes Airport, and other aspects of Howard Hughes’ Nevada operations. The George Knox Roth Collection also includes correspondence and expense reports related to his own company, General Research Consultants.

Bob McCaffery Collection on the Save the Hughes Flying Boat Campaign

Abstract

The Bob McCaffery Collection on the Save the Hughes Flying Boat Campaign (1980-1983) documents efforts by activists to preserve the plane from destruction and its subsequent acquisition by the Aero Club of Southern California in 1980. The collection contains photographs and newspaper clippings about the Hughes H-4 Hercules flying boat nicknamed the "Spruce Goose" from the 1980s.

Leon Rockwell Papers

Abstract

The Leon Rockwell Papers (1829-1986), consist of materials that document Leon Rockwell's life in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1906 until his death in 1968. Included are diaries, correspondence, photographs, postcards, Las Vegas community event programs, ledger sheets, business cards, and scrapbooks. There are a number of books, information on organizations and businesses that Rockwell owned, real estate documents, and early records of the Las Vegas Volunteer Fire Department, of which Rockwell was an original member.
