Sabbath, Roberta Sterman

Roberta Sabbath was born on December 23, 1943 in Richmond, Virginia. She received her bachelor's degree in French Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1965 and married Dennis Sabbath in 1967. The couple spent two years in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Kodiak, Alaska in 1969 where she started an adult basic education program and a youth program. After about two years in Alaska, Sabbath and her husband moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rhodes, Susan

Susan Rhodes was a member of Temple Beth Am in 2006-2007 when the congregation merged with Adat Ariel to form Temple Sinai. During 2006 Rhodes served as Sergeant-at-arms during Temple Beth AM at meetings that were held to discuss the financial issues faced by Temple Beth Am and as secretary during the 2007 merger.

Abstract

The Historic Building Survey Photograph Collection (1970s-1982) contains color and black-and-white photographic prints and contact sheets of historic buildings in Nevada. Included in the collection are photographs of various churches, fire stations, houses, schools, casinos, motels, and other buildings primarily in the Las Vegas, Nevada area. The photographs are from Dr. Ralph Roske’s History 117 course taught at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Lewis, Leo, 1930-2001

Leo Lewis was born August 24, 1930 in Long Island, New York. He held many positions in various Las Vegas, Nevada hotels and casinos, including the general manager of the Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino and a casino executive in Binion's Horseshoe Club. He retired in 1989, and later taught casino management in University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He assisted in the development of the College of Hotel Administration (William F. Harrah College of Hospitality) at UNLV. He died July 17, 2001.

In this interview, George reflects upon his life in Las Vegas, particularly the period as ma?tre d? of the Sand?s Copa Room. Joined by his daughter - and former United States Democratic Congresswomen-Shelley Berkley, George shares stories of working in the gaming industry during this unique era, including those of Frank Sinatra and Wayne Newton. He also talks about his life as a professional gambler.

Born on February 28, 1925 in Sommerville, New Jersey, George Levine?s family moved to his childhood home, Manhattan?s Lower East Side, when he was six months old. George served on a United States Navy aircraft carrier for thirty months during World War II. After returning home, he met his first wife Estelle, with whom he had two daughters, and soon moved to Kiamesha Lake, New York to work at the Concord Resort Hotel. In 1963, George and his family moved to Las Vegas and took his first job at Mr. Sy?s Casino. Six months later he began waiting tables at the Sands Hotel and Casino. He worked his way up the ranks and was ma?tre d' from 1979 until the hotel closed in 1996.

Cannon, Robert O.

Robert moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1941 for work-related purposes. He was an auditor for the El Rancho Vegas and has also worked as general manager for the Frontier and Tropicana hotels on the Strip. He also was on the Board of Directors at the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Convention Authority.
