Abstract

Oral history interviews with Alma Whitney conducted by Claytee D. White on March 03, 1996 and May 28, 1996 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. Whitney opens the interview by talking about her life in Tallulah, Louisiana. She discusses race relations in Tallulah and how she traveled from Tallulah to Las Vegas, Nevada. Whitney describes her first job as a maid at the Desert Moon Motel, and her move later to the Desert Inn Hotel. Whitney discusses her career of over 30 years at the Desert Inn along with her promotion from maid to supervisor. Whitney also describes a time when Desert Inn employees went on strike for three weeks.

Abstract

The Perry Kaufman Papers (1930-1974) are comprised of research material gathered by Kaufman for his doctoral dissertation, "The Best City of Them All: A History of Las Vegas, 1930-1960." Kaufman's research focused on the Las Vegas, Nevada Chamber of Commerce's role in promoting Las Vegas as a tourist destination. The collection primarily consists of newspaper clippings from the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Las Vegas Sun. It also includes Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce minutes and publications, research on the history of Las Vegas, and Kaufman's notes and writings.

The Robert E. Robinson Legislative Papers are comprised of materials relating to Robert Robinson’s career in the Nevada State Legislature as an assemblyman and senator from 1970 to 1986. The papers include correspondence, assembly bill research, bill proposals, roll calls, and materials from assembly committee meetings. The collection also contains Robinson’s campaign materials, including financial disclosures, press releases, advertisements, and correspondence with voters.

Abstract

The George Stewart Personal Papers (1914-2014) are comprised of military records and personal papers of George Stewart, a fifty-year Las Vegas, Nevada resident. The collection includes information about the Clark County Republican Party, Stewart's service in the United States Army Air Corps, and documents and photographs from Stewart's childhood in the Boy Scouts of America during the 1930s and 1940s. The collection also contains a personal scrapbook containing photographs, fliers, and memorabilia from his early education and military training. Stewart also collected menus and keychains from local Las Vegas, Nevada country clubs and casinos.

The Matthew O'Brien Papers is comprised of records from approximately 2001 to 2011 that document writer Matthew O'Brien's work for two of his Las Vegas, Nevada based non-fiction novels, Beneath the Neon: Life and Death in the Tunnels of Las Vegas and My Week at the Blue Angel: and Other Stories From the Storm Drains, Strip Clubs, and Trailer Parks of Las Vegas. Collection materials include research files, chapter drafts, photographs, and correspondence. The collection materials document O'Brien's process in researching the homeless community in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Max DiJulio Music Scores (1950-1993) are comprised of handwritten and printed musical scores by composer Massimo "Max" DiJulio. Max Dijulio composed and arranged musical scores and conducted many concerts throughout the United States, and was particularly active in Denver, Colorado. In addition to the original scores and sheet music, there are also musical composition books with DiJulio's handwritten notes.

On March 11, 1981, Leora Cohen interviewed city planner, Margie Joanne Corderman (born September 30th, 1933 in Sac City, Iowa) in the kitchen of her home in Boulder City, Nevada. The interview covers the history, growth and development of Boulder City. During the interview, Margie discusses Six Companies houses, swamp coolers, pollution and Boulder City locals having to commute to Las Vegas and Henderson for work. Some of the occupations Margie has held in Clark County, Nevada, include, Clark County Deputy Assessor, engineering aid, planning technician, planning director, and engineering technician.
