Abstract

Oral history interview with Walter V. Long conducted by Tracy Tillander on March 24, 1981 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In the interview, Long discusses his experiences as a high school grammar teacher, assistant principal, and principal in Las Vegas, Nevada. Long also discusses his early life and teaching in Pioche, Nevada; Panaca, Nevada; and Tonopah, Nevada.

Scope and Contents

The Southern Nevada photographs depict towns, mines, railroads, workers, and settlers in Southern Nevada from 1863 to 1960. The photographs primarily depict Native American petroglyphs, desert landscapes, mines and mining machinery, and the archaeological dig at Pueblo Grande de Nevada (also known as the Lost City). The photographs depict the towns of Virginia City, Beatty, Genoa, Searchlight, Rhyolite, St. Thomas, Lost City, Pioche, and Overton. The items described include black-and-white photographic prints, postcards, negatives, and slides; items listed are photographic prints unless otherwise specified.

T. David Horton was an attorney who moved to Pioche, Nevada in the mid-1960s to represent the interests of John Janney, president of Pioche Mines Consolidated Inc. When Janney died in 1967, he left property in Pioche to Horton.
