Description

On March 5, 1978, collector Wendy Christian interviewed truck driver Henry Clay Davis (born April 19, 1900 in Irondale, Virginia) in his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. This interview covers Henry Clay Davis’s personal life history as a resident of Las Vegas, which includes hunting and fishing. He also discusses employment, the railroad, old hotels, the Davis Dam, and Lake Mead. Additionally, he offers a detailed description of the Helldorado.

Abstract

The Helen J. Stewart Papers (1869-1978) document the life of Las Vegas, Nevada pioneer, Helen J. Stewart. It includes correspondence between Stewart and her children as well as various family legal papers and certificates. The collection also contains Helen J. Stewart's 70th birthday scrapbook, a ledger, and a day book from 1904-1919, as well as several photograph albums and information related to the family burial plot.

Portrait of Lemuel (Lem) and Johana Compton. Handwritten on back of photo: "Had a ranch in Nye County at Peavine, in the early nineties. Both of these people are buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Austin [in Lander County, Nevada]. Present owner of the Peavine ranch now Charley Keough, nephew of Mrs. Compton. Mrs. Johana Compton in the late nineties or 1900 used to deliver potatoes from Peavine Ranch to [Y?illegible] Canyon and Berlin, Grantsville [both in Nye County] which they raised at Peavine Ranch." Johana Compton, a former Union Army nurse, died whle trying to save the Peavine Ranch from fire in November 1900.
