Abstract

The Robert B. Griffith Collection (1928-1975) documents the work of Robert B. Griffith, an instrumental figure in the development of water resources in Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as the creation of McCarran International Airport and Nellis Air Force Base. The collection consists of Colorado River Commission papers, 1928 International Air Race documents, general correspondence, a feasibility study, an airport guide, American Legion papers, the memoirs of Alfred Merritt Smith, and death and burial records belonging to his father. The collection also includes slides from various countries, including the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The Byrd Wall Sawyer Collection primarily consists of Byrd's research files on Nevada from 1930 to 1970. The materials concentrate on her monograph, "Nevada Nomads," as well as her co-authored textbook, "Here is Nevada." The collection also includes speeches, journal articles, memos, research note cards and papers, correspondence, informational booklets and pamphlets, maps, photographs, audiovisual materials, and newspaper articles and clippings.

Nathan Adelson Hospice Records

Abstract

Collection consists primarily of administrative records and event photographs from the Nathan Adelson Hospice (NAH) in Las Vegas, Nevada from its founding in 1978 to 2016. Included are annual reports, board meeting minutes, by-laws, promotional materials, issues of Monarch, the hospice newsletter, and some press clippings. Also included in this collection are commemorative birthday books for NAH co-founder, Irwin Molasky, and his wife, Susan Molasky. A small amount of material is related to the Nathan Adelson Memorial Hospice Book Collection.

Las Vegas-Clark County Urban Action Committee Task Force Records

Abstract

The Las Vegas-Clark County Urban Action Committee Task Force Records (1973-1974) was created by the Nevada legislature in 1973 to consider the future organization of Clark County. The Committee formed five task forces to examine judicious ways to incorporate county areas into the city: budget and finance; fire and police; planning, zoning, building codes, and related elements; water, streets, sewerage, sewers solid waste, and flood control; and boards and commissions. There is a file of minutes from each task force. Also included are contracts and questionnaires sent to home and property owners.

The T. Carson Swizzle Stick Collection dates from the 1960s to the 1980s and consists of swizzle sticks from various venues collected by T. Carson. The collection includes eleven plastic swizzle sticks without names or logos and five clear glass swizzle sticks. The collection contains several with business names or logos: Huckelbury's (3); Hotel Mellen, Fall River, Massachusetts; orange Western Airlines; Heinz 57; Union Pacific, City of Las Vegas; and Silver Palace, Downtown Las Vegas.

Binion's Horseshoe Casino Records on Poker

Abstract

The Binion's Horseshoe Casino Records on Poker (1960-2006) are composed of materials related to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) held at Binion's Horseshoe Casino. Publicity and promotional materials include press releases and press kits, newspaper and advertising clippings, photographs, advertising campaigns, and advertising copy. These records were mainly generated by the Binion press agent, Henri Bollinger. Other topics covered in the collection include the establishment of the Poker Hall of Fame, and promotional and publicity efforts by Binion's Horseshoe in the 1970s and 1980s.

Ron Lurie Papers

Abstract

The Ron Lurie Papers are primarily comprised of photographs, newspaper clippings, and daily planners from 1972 to 1990 that document Ron Lurie's political career as a city councilman and a mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection also includes a small amount of correspondence and ephemera, mainly letters that were mailed to Lurie along with photographs. The photographs in the collection depict events and activities that Lurie participated in, and the newspaper clippings document city and state politics in addition to Lurie's political career.
