Abstract

The Eric A. Jamieson Photographs contain photographic slides of the Western United States' Intermountain region from 1955 to 1983. The bulk of the images are of the region's physical and urban landscapes and include Las Vegas, Nevada, the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street, Nevada mining towns, Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston, Valley of Fire, Lake Mead, and Death Valley.

Abstract

The William J. Moore Jr. Photograph Collection (approximately 1942-1960) consists of black-and-white photographic prints, negatives, and one oversize image depicting William "Bill" J. Moore Jr.'s career as a casino operator in Las Vegas, Nevada. Images include events at the Moore family home and the Hotel Last Frontier. Also included are images of Moore with politicians, casino operators, and other notable figures in Las Vegas.

Abstract

The Frank Mitrani Photographs depict people and events in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1953 to 2010. The photographs are primarily portraits of Las Vegas businesspeople, including realtors, salespeople, insurance agents, bankers, and executives. The photographs depict several service organizations operating in Southern Nevada, including the Rotary Club of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Jaycees, the Elks Lodge, and the Assistance League. The photographs also depict hotels and casinos, politicians and political campaigns, news organizations, schools, the Elks Lodge, healthcare professionals, weddings and engagements, and religious events.

Rob Schlegel oral history interviews

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Rob Schlegel conducted by Dennis McBride on various dates in March and April of 1998 for the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives Oral History Project. In the interviews, Schlegel recalls his early life in Port Angeles, Washington, his conservative Baptist upbringing, and his early experiences with literature. Schlegel then discusses working with newspaper publications in high school and college, understanding his sexuality during college, his first gay sexual experience, and his first trip to Las Vegas, Nevada. He recalls working with Robert Lloyd "Bob" Brown at the Valley Times during this visit. Schlegel talks about moving to Las Vegas and working full-time as the production manager for the Valley Times. Schlegel explains becoming active in politics through his newspaper work, meeting notable casino executives, and financial and political controversies the Valley Times experienced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He then describes coming out as gay, and working at the Nevada Gay Times beginning in 1985. Schlegel also talks about opening and managing the Bright Pink Literature bookstore in 1987 and starting a separate publication Night Beat in 1992. He then recalls co-founding Las Vegas Gay Pride and Southern Nevada Association of Pride, Inc., conflicts he had within the Las Vegas gay community, and working at the Gipsy nightclub as a secretary. Lastly, Schlegel discusses the repeal of Nevada's sodomy laws, homophobia, and memories of individuals and organizations associated with the Las Vegas gay community.

Oral history interview with Lisa Song Sutton conducted by Cecilia Winchell, Vanessa Concepcion, and Stefani Evans on November 19, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project.

Lisa shares her personal history and childhood memories moving from Seoul, South Korea to Sierra Vista, Arizona at the age of five. She discusses her educational and professional pursuits in business litigation, bankruptcy law, entrepreneurship, modeling, and her time in the pageant circuit winning Miss Vegas and Miss Nevada in 2013. Lisa also talks about her activism and community engagement efforts to empower women within Las Vegas. She concludes her interview with insight into her Korean heritage, traditional celebrations, and religion.

Maurice Halfon Behar Papers

Abstract

Collection is comprised of photographs, correspondence, and other documents created by Holocaust survivor Maurice Halfon Behar and his family from the 1920s to 2015. The photographs depict the Behar, Bally, and Halfon families from the 1920s to the 1950s. They show Maurice Behar as a child with his mother in France, and his parents' families in Istanbul, Turkey, and Biarritz, France. The documents and correspondence to and from the family of Maurice Halfon Behar regard reparations from the French and German governments for the displacement of the Halfon family during the German occupation of France.

Abstract

The Gerald Schaffer Professional Papers (approximately 1949-1999) contain materials from Schaffer's time working as a political executive assistant, private sector consultant, and developer of commercial, residential, and gaming projects throughout Clark County, Nevada. The collection includes newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, and administrative files from Schaffer's time working as an executive assistant for Nevada Congressman Walter S. Baring Jr. Schaffer's work with organizations is represented through programs, photographs, and correspondence. Documents relating to his work as Commissioner of Public Housing on the Clark County Public Housing Authority, service as Clark County Planning Commissioner, and as a commercial and residential developer in Las Vegas are also present in the collection.

The Station Casinos Menu collection is comprised of digital food and beverage menus (approximately 2016) from hotel casino restaurants owned by the Station Casinos gaming company in Las Vegas, Nevada. Digital menus are from restaurants within Green Valley Ranch Resort Spa & Casino and a digitized Food Express Chinese Restaurant menu from Palace Station Hotel & Casino.

The H. E. and Ruth Hazard Political Papers (1937-1977) consist of papers and memorabilia related to Nevada and national Democratic politics. It includes materials about the Nevada legislature; clippings and information about the Nevada Tax Commission; political memorabilia including invitations and programs related to the presidential inaugurations of Lyndon Johnson and Jimmy Carter; documents about the purchase of Basic Magnesium Inc. by the state of Nevada; and newspaper clippings.
