Abstract

The Shirley Edmond Papers (approximately 1950-2019) contain newspaper clippings, magazines, and church bulletins related to Edmond's civic participation over the years. The collection also contains photographs and ephemera related to the Johnson family and their business on Jackson Street on the Westside, Johnson's Malt Shop. Shirley Edmond grew up on the Westside, and was the first African American woman in Southern Nevada promoted by the United States Post Office to be a supervisor. She also worked at Matt Kelly Elementary School.

Abstract

The Richard Taylor Collection on Moulin Rouge Hotel History contains documents that provide information on a short-term lease of the shuttered Moulin Rouge Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada in December 1956. The collection contains a lease between Harry Miller (trustee in bankruptcy) and Richard Taylor for a short term lease of the hotel; a certificate of fictitious firm name submitted by Richard Taylor; a press release issued by Harry Miller on behalf of the hotel; and three Moulin Rouge guest register tags.

Morris Shenker oral history interviews

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Morris Shenker conducted by Cylde Weiss sometime between 1978 and 1983. At the time of the interviews, Weiss was a gaming reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and Shenker was the co-owner of the Dunes Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Weiss used the interviews in an article in the Review-Journal where he described Shenker as feeling "mob pressure" in his role a the hotel. Shenker was previously an attorney who represented Jimmy Hoffa. No digital audio or transcript; audiocassette only.

Abstract

The 1955 Gaming License for Mina, Nevada collection consists of a single gaming license issued to Nick Marakas to operate slot machines at the Mina Club in Mina, Nevada. The license was purchased by Marakas for $66.00 and issued by the State of Nevada's Mineral County in Hawthorne, Nevada on January 3, 1955.

George E. Perkins Letter about Paiute History

Abstract

The George E. Perkins Letter about Paiute History (approximately 1900-1929) consists of a four-page handwritten recounting of Paiute history and tradition "as told to the author" (George Elwood Perkins). The recounted story references the Las Vegas Wash and Boulder Canyon, as well as agreements between the Hualapais and the Paiutes regarding living and hunting along the Colorado River.

T. D. Bonner Manuscript Draft

The T. D. Bonner Manuscript Draft (approximately 1880-1899) consists of a single typed manuscript draft with "T. D. Bonner, 1st. edition 1856" written on the top. It appears to be a brief introduction and seventy-seven corresponding footnotes. It is not known if this is related to either books that Bonner co-authored.

Abstract

The UNLV University Libraries Collection on Southern Nevada Mining (1905-1921) contains documents, financial records, and customer correspondence from various mining companies operating in Southern Nevada during the early 20th century. Key figures and mining operations represented in the collection include Charles Sprague, Benjamin Gill, Hugh Brown, Earl Rinker, and the Goldfield Consolidated Mining Company. Also included is a 1905 panoramic photograph entitled "Rose & Palmer's Teams" taken by Ramsey and Pierce in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roundtable oral history interview conducted by Lisa Gioia-Acres with some of the founding members of the Musicians Wives Club of Las Vegas on October 1, 2008 for the All That Jazz Oral History Project. Interviewees include Renee Rampton, Rosemaria Gordon, Myrna Williams, Phyllis Kluger, and Leslie Marsh. Also included are two photographs (reproductions) taken on June 4, 1964 at the installation ceremony of the first officers.
