Abstract

The Sergio Salgado Photographs (approximately 1967-1992) consist of photographic prints and slides taken by Salgado that document scenes around Las Vegas, Nevada. Subjects include daily life, social gatherings, Mexican community events, hotels and casinos on and near the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street, and Helldorado parades. Several of the photographs document social and fundraising events of the Mexican Social Club.

Scope and Contents Note

The Sergio Salgado Photographs (approximately 1967-1992) consist of photographic prints and slides taken by Salgado that document scenes around Las Vegas, Nevada. Subjects include daily life, social gatherings, Mexican community events, hotels and casinos on and near the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street, and Helldorado parades. Several of the photographs document social and fundraising events of the Mexican Social Club. Also included in the collection is a photograph depicting the Valley High School (Las Vegas, Nevada) Class of 1972 that was not taken by Salgado.

Biographical / Historical Note

Sergio Manuel Salgado was born on October 20, 1939 in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. He was raised in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico and El Paso, Texas. Salgado moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in the late 1950s and married Norma Reyes in 1963. The couple had three children, Norma, Alex, and Sergio “Checko.”

In addition to working in the hospitality industry in Las Vegas, Salgado was active in his community and was a writer and photographer. He wrote a weekly column for the El Mundo Newspaper titled "De Todo un Poco." He was a founding member of the Mexican Patriotic Committee and the Mexican Social Club. Sergio M. Salgado passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 3, 2021.
