Abstract

The Amy Ayoub Papers (1906-2022) document the life and career of Amy Ayoub, a long-time resident of Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection consists of correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, research, and other material that document the numerous facets of Ayoub's life. The collection covers many areas: Ayoub's early childhood; her family, including father Bobby Ayoub and stepfather Raymond Sutton; her financial consulting career and political work; her experience working as a prostitute in Nevada and subsequent documentary about being sex trafficked and working in brothels; time spent as the first female Nevada Athletic Commissioner; and more. Digital files include audio and video files of Mike Tyson's 2002 licensure hearing, and video of Ayoub's testimony before the Nevada State Assembly Judiciary Committee for Assembly Bill 67 in 2013. There are also digitized photographs that Ayoub used for the documentary The Zen Speaker: Breaking the Silence.

Robert Lang Professional Papers

Abstract

The Robert Lang Professional Papers (1976-2020) mainly contain urban planning research and reports from former University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) professor and public policy expert Robert Lang. Materials represent different public policy related projects and issues Lang worked on when he was employed with the Fannie Mae Foundation in Washington, D.C., and Brookings Mountain West and the Lincy Institute at UNLV. Materials also include Lang's teaching files which include course syllabi, class presentation slides, and course readers. Research, notes, and drafts of Lang's books including Boomburbs: The Rise of America's Accidental Cities, Edgeless Cities: Exploring the Elusive Metropolis, and Blue Metros, Red States: The Shifting Urban-Rural Divide in America's Swing States are also represented in the collection. The collection also includes documentation for invited conferences and events documenting different conferences and events, copies of Black's Guide for commercial real estate in the United States.

Cultural Focus Tours Research Notes

Abstract

The Cultural Focus Tours Research Notes (1989-1990) contain background information about historical locations and topics in Las Vegas's history used by Cultural Focus Tours, a division of the Allied Arts Council of Nevada. Cultural Focus Tours, developed by historic preservationist Elizabeth von til Warren, provided tours of historic landmarks around Las Vegas, Nevada including the Hoover Dam, Nevada Test Site, Valley of Fire, Old Spanish Trail, and the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort. Materials also include the 40th anniversary issue of the Las Vegas Sun newspaper. The materials were presumably collected by Susan Anderl Jarvis who was a tour guide for Cultural Focus Tours.

Materials document her political career serving in the Nevada State Senate and working as the press secretary for Harry Reid congressional offices. The collection also includes materials that represent Wiener's work as a communications specialist through her consulting businesses and her nonprofit work. Other materials in this collection document Wiener's personal life including her childhood and family, educational experiences, and her spiritual practice.

Abstract

The Women of Diversity Productions, Inc. Records (approximately 1920-2018) contain the records of Las Vegas, Nevada based organization, Women of Diversity Productions, Inc (WOD). The collection is comprised of operational records and research primarily created by WOD's founder, Dr. Marlene Adrian. The records represent the organization's work in publishing, creating documentaries, and organizing events highlighting the history and achievements of women in Nevada's history. Records include event files, Board of Director meeting agendas and minutes, grant applications, and research files for WOD's activities including projects for the Las Vegas Centennial and Nevada Sesquicentennial events. The materials also include research and final reports for the 2017 and 2018 Gaming Gender Equality Index which was co-authored by Adrian and Denise R. Duarte.

Also included are DVDs of adult films, BSG PR memorabilia, and some personal correspondence to Brian Gross.

The television programs represent a broad range of genres including entertainment, news, documentary, and talk shows on local and national television networks.

Charley Henchis Papers

Abstract

The Charley Henchis Papers (approximately 1945-1987) document the career of international cabaret show producer Charley Henchis and the shows he produced in Las Vegas, Nevada and Beirut, Lebanon. Materials include Henchis' business files which includes correspondence, files on specialty acts, photographs, and press about Henchis. Shows represented in this collection includes La Parisienne which was performed at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas in 1960 before moving to Casino du Liban in Beirut. Other shows represented in this collection that were produced for Casino du Liban includes Mais Oui, S'il Vous Plait, Flash!, and Hello!. Additional materials include press and publicity files, music arrangements and scores, recordings of musical numbers used for the productions, and film footage of shows and production reels. Also included is film footage of the Charley Ballet, Henchis' dance troupe who were featured in his shows.

The collection also includes records about art projects produced by Joshua Abbey and other ventures he was involved with.

The Michael Circuit Menu Collection (1989-2019) contains menus from restaurants in Las Vegas, Nevada, both free standing and located in casinos. The menus were collected by Michael Circuit, a local real estate agent and businessman who had originally collected the menus to decorate the walls of a restaurant he had planned on opening but did not come to fruition. This collection is minimally processed.
