UNLV Libraries Collection of Gaming Artifacts and Ephemera

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Gaming Artifacts and Ephemera (approximately 1863-2012) is comprised of Las Vegas, Nevada casino gaming artifacts; games such as Pai Gow, Las Vegas themed board games, Piquet, and punchboards; and ephemera items about gaming. The collection contains postcards and newspaper clippings advertising for casinos in Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, the Bahamas, France, and California. The collection also contains information on gaming legislation in Europe and the United States, writings on gambling systems, gaming tickets, and various pamphlets on how to play different games such as roulette and baccarat, as well as several decks of souvenir playing cards, dice, and buttons.

The collection, dated 1941-1947, consists of loose-leaf notes from the daily journal of Arlin Rex Johnson (1898-1970), Budget and Planning Officer at the Coordinator of Information (COI) office in Washington, D.C. from September 2, 1941 to December 23, 1941, and a list of foreign visitors during his tenure as Assistant Director of Foreign Agricultural Relations at the United States Department of Agriculture from 1945-1947.

The Sam Jones Letter consists of a one-page letter written on Friday, May 27, 1938 by an unknown individual to Sam Jones, a miner living in Goodsprings, Nevada. The letter identifies a Harold Hawks from Chloride, Arizona, as a fellow miner interested in viewing Jones's property in Nevada.

The Ken "Nevada" Maines Papers (approximately 1960-1980) contains items written by Maines, including sheet music for his songs "Fremont Street," "My Name Is Love," and "My Little Polish Rose," a poem, and a flier "Hints for Handicappers." There is a printout of an article on Maines that appeared in the Las Vegas Sun. The collection also contains various sound recordings, some of which Maines composed.
