Landing at Cottonwood on the Colorado River

Transcribed Notes: Transcribed from photo sleeve: "Cottonwood Landing, 1946. In 1946 the National Park Service gave a temporary permit to Hurl Emery, then operating the Eldorado Fishing Camp at Eldorado Canyon, to establish a landing at Cottonwood. The dock shown was put in, also a few tent cabins, one serving as a store. It operated under these conditions for several years until a permanent lease was issued by bid to a new operator. Not shown is 16 miles of rough dirt road. Courtesy Ella Kay."

This interview covers the early days in Boulder City. Mr. Holmes also discusses the local education system, family life, employment opportunities, housing, and the building of Hoover Dam.

Description

On February 23, 1979, collector Sean Powers interviewed Joseph C. Mattingly (born April 21st, 1912 in Texas) at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. In this interview, Mr. Mattingly discusses working construction on many buildings in the Las Vegas and Henderson areas in Nevada. He also talks about being a member of a motorcycle club and about air conditioning in the early days.

Black and white image showing an exterior view of J. Warren Woodard's camp and service station in downtown Las Vegas. Additional description provided by UNLV Special Collection: "In 1926, Earle managed the Station and Camp on Main near Bonanza site of first school in Vegas, in 1905. A tent house - boarded up about halfway and desks built against the fall - pupils sat facing the wall. Miss Plum (sp?) from Reno was the teacher." Note: "Earle" previously referred to may be Earle Eglington.
