Abstract

Oral history interview with Florence Schroeder conducted by DeAnn E. Hunt on March 08, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Schroeder discusses her employment with the Extension Service as a home demonstration agent in Southern Nevada. She also describes her employment as a teacher in Clark County and Lincoln County, and explains her involvement with the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Later, Schroeder discusses the education system and social life in Southern Nevada.

John Theodore Gilcrease oral history interviews

Abstract

Oral history interviews with John Theodore Gilcrease conducted by Robert McCracken on October 09 and 10, 2000 and March 21, 2001 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) on behalf of the Tule Springs Preservation Committee. Gilcrease opens his interview by discussing his family's lineage and Irish heritage. Gilcrease then explains how his family purchased farm land in the Tule Springs, Nevada area in 1920. He discusses how his family modified and changed the land, their irrigation system, and the animals they bred. Gilcrease goes on to talk about the development of the farm and how the development of Las Vegas, Nevada affected the property. Gilcrease recalls the life of his farm and family from the early the 1900s to the 1960s and talks about other prominent farming families in the area.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Sally Harviel and Judy MacMillan conducted by Claytee D. White on July 21, 2016 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In the first part of the interview, Harviel discusses her early life moving around the United States, her marriages, and moving to Henderson, Nevada in 1990. She recalls being a founding member of the Desert Newcomers Club, a non-profit social organization for women living in Henderson and Boulder City, Nevada. She also describes events the Desert Newcomers Club held within the Las Vegas, Nevada community throughout the years. In the second part of the interview, MacMillan recalls her early life in California, moving to Las Vegas sometime after her marriage, and her work as a Desert Newcomers Club board member. Lastly, Harviel and MacMillan discuss the Las Vegas community's interest in community projects and women's societies of which they belonged.
