Las Vegas, Nevada Women's Softball Collection

Abstract

The Las Vegas, Nevada Women's Softball Collection (1951-1952) contains photographic prints and negatives depicting a southern Nevada women's softball team. The team was sponsored by Wilson's Texaco Station in Boulder City, Nevada, and the women played in regional games in both southern California and southern Nevada. Photographs in the collection show the team practicing at Peterson Field in Boulder City, and celebrating and spending time together at the Mt. Charleston Lodge. The collection also contains copies of personal accounts written by team member Orpha Alveta Bowman (McBride), who recalls the prejudice some of the lesbian members faced from local community members. The originals of these handwritten accounts are held in MS-01099.

Part of the collection documents the entire 19 mile length of the north/south Eastern Avenue / Civic Center Drive alignment. This photograph was captured in the section of Civic Center Drive between Alexander Road and Cheyenne Avenue.

Las Vegas Television Viewer Reports and Programming Guides

Abstract

The Las Vegas Television Viewer Reports and Programming Guides (1955-1982) is comprised of Las Vegas, Nevada television audience reports from marketing research firms including the American Research Bureau and Arbitron Company from 1962 to 1982. Materials also include Las Vegas television programming guides dating from 1955 to 1967. The materials were collected by Bob Stoldal, who was a news anchor and director for KLAS-TV and longtime Southern Nevada historian.

Included are newspaper clippings, a poster pamphlet, gaming and rewards program information, and photographs of the hotel rooms. Also included is information about the art program, the shops, bars, nightclubs, and convention facilities.
