Folder of materials from the Mabel Hoggard Papers (MS-00565) -- Educational work and legacy file. The folder contains a "Teachers' manual for human geography," teaching notes, notes on United States history, assignments, and an exam book with handwritten notes. Many of the documents are handwritten.
Dr. Joseph "Andy" Fry is currently a professor of history at UNLV. He was born and grew up in West Virginia, the only child of an insurance salesman and a public school teacher. His parents met in Ronceverte, West Virginia, and lived for a while in his grandmother's boarding house. He had an idyllic childhood in this small town of 2500 people. Andy received an excellent high school education, including learning eighth grade English and 2 years of Latin from his mother. After graduation, he was interested in playing college basketball and ended up at Davis and Elkins College in east central West Virginia. Undecided on a major at first, he tried math and then chemistry, but he found his niche when he began studying the history of western civilization. During his undergraduate years, Andy met his wife-to-be, Sandra Schwitzer, and they were married in 1969 in the summer after their senior year. He was accepted at graduate school in history at the University of Virginia, so he and his bride moved to Charlottesville. After that, he worked for 2 years at Virginia Tech. In 1975, Dr. Fry was offered a job at UNLV, so he and his family packed up and moved to Las Vegas. He was welcomed to the history department by such notables as Roman "Jay" Zom, Ralph Rosky, and Tom Wright. In addition to teaching, he has had the opportunity to do research, write 4 books, and edit a series of diplomatic biographies. Andy was department chair in the mid 80s and again from 1999 to 2002. He also served for three years as executive assistant to Dr. Carol Harter (president of UNLV for 11 years), but prefers teaching over administrative work. His plans for the future are to finish a fifth book and continue teaching to at least age 66.

Dr. Robert Bruce Smith was born in Philadelphia and spent his first two years in New Jersey, but thinks of California as home. His father's calling as a minister had taken them back east, and after his seminary training they returned to Los Angeles, followed by a five year stint in Oregon before returning to Vista, California. After high school graduation, Bob left home to attend Wheaton College in Illinois, a small Protestant school. He met his wife there and after completing his Bachelor's in chemistry they were off to Berkeley, where he completed his PhD in three years. Along the way, Dr. Smith had worked for G.D. Searle in Skokie, Illinois, and at first thought that this was his calling. His semester as a Teaching Assistant, however, convinced him that the academic life was what he wanted. Late in 1961, he learned of a job opening at the Southern Regional Division of the University of Nevada (now UNLV), interviewed with Malcolm Graham who was recruiting in San Francisco, and flew to Las Vegas to see the campus for himself. It consisted of three and a half buildings surrounded by desert. Robert's thesis director encouraged him to take the job at this new, very small college, so he and his wife drove to Las Vegas to find an apartment. They fell in love with the area and he started at UNLV as assistant professor of chemistry. He did work in organic chemistry and served as chair of the Department of Physical Sciences, as it was then called. In 1968 the department was turned into a college, and Bob became the dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. He held this position for 12 years. In 1980, Dr. Smith accepted an offer from Weber State College in Ogden, Utah, and served there as Academic Vice President (later Provost) until his retirement in 1998. He recalls with great clarity the people, changes, and events that he was involved with during the early years at UNLV. Today he and his wife enjoy their retirement in their favorite spot in the San Jacinto Mountains.
Oral history interview with Kaweeda Adams conducted by Kim Kershaw on March 05, 2004 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Adams reflects upon her career as a teacher in Louisiana from the 1980s to the 1990s, and as a teacher and administrator with Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD) from the 1990s to the early 2000s. She discusses her upbringing, and how her upbringing influenced her pursuit of education. She describes the process by which she became a teacher and eventually administrator, and compares her experiences working in Louisiana and Nevada. She discusses how these experiences shaped her philosophy of education, as well as changes that she has observed in the students over time. She describes her regular job duties, as well as challenges that she faced as a school administrator such as teacher dismissal and evaluations.
Oral history interview with Alice Wisdom conducted by Elizabeth Goodman on October 13, 2003 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Wisdom reflects upon her career as a teacher and administrator in Texas and Nevada. She describes the process by which she first became a teacher in Texas, and then the Bahamas in the 1970s. She then discusses how she was hired to teach in Nevada’s Clark County School District in 1979 before eventually being appointed as principal of various elementary and middle schools. She describes her approach to school administration and working relationships, and discusses colleagues who impacted her throughout her career.
Oral history interview with Dr. Mervin R. Iverson conducted by Mary Gipp on April 14, 2003 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Dr. Iverson reflects upon his career as a teacher and administrator with Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD) from the 1960s to the 1990s. He describes the process by which he became a teacher and eventually an administrator, his working relationship with teachers and other administrators, and his experiences with school integration. He also discusses his experience working at a high school in Saudi Arabia, and how it compared to working in the United States.
Oral history interview with Howard E. Nielsen conducted by Adina Elison on March 29, 2003 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Nielsen reflects upon his experience as a teacher and administrator in Utah and Arizona during the 1970s and 1980s. He describes his upbringing and the process by which he became a teacher, principal, and assistant to the superintendent following military service. He describes his approach to teaching and educational leadership, his regular responsibilities, and experience working across grade levels simultaneously.
Deanna Stefanelli and her family moved to Las Vegas when her husband John Stefanelli accepted a position as a professor in Food and Beverage at UNLV. She took a part-time job in the admin office of the university's library in 1981. It was also an ideal time for her to return to college to finish her degree. Eventually she became full-time and enjoyed the growth and change of UNLV and the library. Deanna recalls the physical and personnel changes of the library. She describes some of the fun activities that kept them a close work community—from the Friends of the Library to book sales and pancake breakfasts, to a newsletter and learning to make sushi with Myoung-ja Kwon.
