Description

Interviewed by Monserrath Hernández, Nathalie Martinez and Rodrigo Vázquez. Irene Cepeda is a woman dedicated to serving the Latinx as well as all minority groups in education in Southern Nevada. As a Las Vegas native, she grew up alongside the Latinx community here and is a proud Latina from Nicaraguan roots. She is dedicated to uplifting the Latinx community through her work with the Latino Youth Leadership Conference and college access specialist at Nevada State College. Now, as representative of District D on the Clark County School District Board of Trustees, she seeks to tackle the issues the district faces from acts of White supremacy to a lack of funding for English Language Learner families.

Oral history interview with Elsa Lopez-Martinez conducted by Barbara Tabach on June 21, 2021 for Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project.

Elsa, one of the original student interviewers for the Latinx Voices project, talks about her family, her Mexican-American roots, and her experience learning Spanish and English. She discusses her education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and her work as an interviewer with Latinx Voices before her graduation. Elsa also shares what it has been like entering the workforce as an elementary school teacher during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Leni H. Proctor conducted by Jennifer Blankingship on May 16, 2002 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Proctor reflects upon her experience as a principal in Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD). She describes the process by which she became a teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada, and later became principal of Helen J. Stewart School. She also discusses her experiences as a female, and how these experiences shaped her approach to school administration, teacher-principal relationships, and interactions with parents. She also provides her opinion on standardized testing, curriculum changes, and what she believes makes an effective school administrator.

Description

On February 26, 1981, collector Iskandar A. Batlouni interviewed Harvey N. Dondero (born November 12, 1909 in Hawthorne, Nevada) in his office in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a member of the Las Vegas Board of Education, Mr. Dondero discusses relocating to Las Vegas in 1931 to teach at Las Vegas High School. During this interview, Mr. Dondero also discusses the Boulder (Hoover) Dam, the gaming industry, school integration, the Westside, the Strip, Howard Hughes, Block 16, and the growth of Las Vegas from a sleepy railroad town to a thriving metropolis.
