Abstract

Oral history interview with Ruth Annette Mills conducted by Lisa Gioia-Acres on November 20, 2008 for the Heart to Heart Oral History Project. Mills discusses her career as an elementary school teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada and being a community activist in the League of Women Voters. She also discusses her work as a facilitator for the school integration program in Las Vegas and starting the Nevada Health Care Reform Project.

Abstract

The Alan Cummings Research Files (1974-2004) are comprised of research files compiled by Cummings, an elementary school teacher for the Clark County School District (CCSD) in Southern Nevada. The files represent Cummings's work to persuade the Teacher's Health Trust, the employee benefit plan for the school district, to consider domestic partnership benefits for CCSD educators and administrators. Materials include personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, magazines, and court cases.

Description

Interview with Myra Berkovits, Susan Dubin and Doug Unger of the Holocaust Resource Center. In this interview, the group discusses the beginnings of what is now the Sperling Kronberg Mack Holocaust Resource Center. Edythe Katz-Yarchever is discussed as the catalyst for establishing the center and getting others involved with the Governor's Advisory Council on Education Relating to the Holocaust. Berkovits talks about her role as a liason for Holocaust education in the Clark County School District and the student-teacher conferences held each year with funding from Sheldon Adelson. Unger discusses expanding the outreach to the Washoe County School District with assistance from Atlantis Hotel (Reno, Nev.) owner, John Farahi and Judy Mack. They talk about the previous locations of the Holocaust Resource Center on Maryland Parkway, then Renaissance Drive, and the affiliation with the Jewish Federation and the Jewish Family Service Agency. After funding and personnel issues around 2011, the advisory council and the library went through a re-structuring and hired Susan Dubin who organized and catalogued the library collection. The library is now accredited by the Association of Jewish Libraries.

Oral history interview with Dr. Larry Moses conducted by Benjamin Day on April 04, 2003 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Dr. Moses reflects upon his experience as a principal in Nevada’s Clark County School District and Lyon County School District. He emphasizes the day-to-day experiences as a school administrator, and discusses how his responsibilities and philosophy changed daily. He also stresses the importance of working relationships between administrators, teachers, parents, and local communities to achieve the best school performance.

Oral history interview with Florence Schroeder conducted by DeAnn E. Hunt on March 08, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Schroeder discusses her employment with the Extension Service as a home demonstration agent in Southern Nevada. She also describes her employment as a teacher in Clark County and Lincoln County, and explains her involvement with the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Later, Schroeder discusses the education system and social life in Southern Nevada.

Lilly Fong oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Lilly Fong conducted by Annie Yuk-Siu Shum on February 29, 1980 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Fong discusses receiving her education in both China and Arizona and later completing her Master’s degree in education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She describes how she held multiple careers, starting at the historic Fifth Street School as a third grade teacher in 1950 and continued to opening a Chinese restaurant called Fong’s Garden with her husband, Wing Fong. Then Fong describes her campaign for the Nevada State Board of Regents in 1974 where she would help develop the building of the University's Fine Arts Complex. The interview concludes with Fong’s thoughts on the Asian Studies program at UNLV.
