Oral history interview with Dr. William Larkin conducted by Ann Larkin on February 10, 2001 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Dr. Larkin reflects upon his career as a middle and high school teacher and administrator in Wisconsin. He discusses different schools and universities that he taught at before becoming a principal, challenges that he faced as a new principal, and life experiences that shaped his approach to education. He describes his experiences working with culturally diverse schools, standardized testing, and school violence, and highlights elements of his training that best prepared him for his career. He also provides his opinion on contemporary topics within the education system, such as curriculum changes, salaries, and school board oversight.
Oral history interview with Bill Garis conducted by Laurie Hackett on March 29, 2004 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Garis reflects upon his 11 years as a principal with Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD). He discusses his approach to school administration and working relationships with teachers and other administrators, and offers suggestions for individuals interested in pursuing school administration. He also discusses his responsibilities as principal of Boulder City High School and Sierra Vista High School.
Three decades prior to this interview, Chris Guinchigliani moved to Las Vegas and began teaching at the Clark County School District. Seeing Las Vegas as a place of personal opportunity, she involved herself first in the teachers union; eventually serving as president of the Nevada State Education Association from 1987 through 1991. She shares some of her political experiences being elected to the Nevada State Assembly for 16 years and then became a Clark County Commissioner. Chris and her husband Gary Gray (above left) are longtime residents of the John S. Park Neighborhood and Chris was among those who originated the idea to getting a historical designation for the community. She highlights the process and obstacles within the community as people developed an understanding about what preservation really meant.
