Woodward, Alice, 1905-1972

Alice Woodward was born in Texas and graduated from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1930. she married Herbert Spencer Woodward in 1932 in Los Angeles, California. Herbert worked as a miner and the couple relocated to Nevada in 1935. She worked as a teacher in Sandy Valley from 1935 to 1940 and then in Goodsprings from 1945 to 1950. She lived in Goodsprings until her death in July 1972.

Description

Semi-blurry picture of the Pahrump Valley Ranch Company in 1916. In the spring-fed swimming pool from left to right are "ladies at play": Verne Bowen, school teacher; Mrs. Clyde (Anita) Chubb; Mrs. Glen (Carolyn) Darrough; Mrs. Clarence (Clare) Telford; others unidentified. Women swam in the afternoons, men swam in the mornings (nude), boys swam at both times.

The school was located in front of the stone house, which belonged to Giovanni Fallini. The children are, Hazel Aragoni, Alice Pete, Dick Pete, and Lawrence Aragoni (identified from left to right); the teacher is Helen Humphrey.

Alma Vining oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Alma Vining conducted by Barbara Tabach, Nathalie Martinez, and Laurents Banuelos-Benitez on February 13, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Vining shares what it was like growing up as a child of Mexican immigrants. She talks about her childhood in McAllen, Texas, disclosing her experiences with racial discrimination as a child and as she grew into adulthood. She stresses the importance of education and lifelong learning in relation to her career as a teacher and school principal. Vining moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1972 and jumped into the community with her involvement in Nevada Association of Latin Americans (NALA) and on the television program, Minor Key. She shares her experiences earning her Master's Degree in Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Vining talks about her teaching career and the 30 years of experience gained in the Clark County School District.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. Sandra Carmody conducted by Alyson Jones and Dottie Kulesza on August 3, 2001 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Carmody discusses her personal philosophy of education and how it transformed over the span of her career in education from the late 1960s to 2000. Though the bulk of her career was with the Clark County School District, she discusses general duties and responsibilities of school principals, challenges that administrators face, and her suggestions for successful principalship. She also discusses her family background, growing up in New York before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to receive teaching certification from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She then discusses the process by which she began working with the Clark County School District following her certification from UNLV, and how she went from being a teacher to assuming the role of principal.

Oral history interview with Kevin Chung conducted by Cecelia Winchell, Stefani Evans, and Jerwin Tiu on December 18, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project.

Kevin Chung discusses his upbringing in Southern Vietnam and how he and his family were forced to leave the country during the Vietnam War. Chung talks about his family's migration to Minnesota and how they adapted to American culture. He shares his educational background, his professional pursuits as a teacher, and the reasons he and his wife decided to move to Las Vegas. Chung reflects on the importance of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) in education with an emphasis on the arts and shares his teaching philosophy. He also gives details of his family's lives and talks about the importance of bringing together his Vietnamese and American cultures to connect the different generations of his family.
