Abstract

The Thomas & Mack Center Records (1980-1995) contain materials relating to the final planning, advertisement, and promotion of the Thomas & Mack event center on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. Documents include seating charts and ticket prices, event and informational packets, flyers for the 1985 AT&T Challenge of Champions, and the final building report from 1980. The collection also includes copies of Backstage, the Thomas & Mack employee publication. Some of the material includes information about Sam Boyd Stadium (formerly the Las Vegas Silver Bowl).

Stardust Hotel and Desert Inn Hotel Photographic Negatives

Abstract

The Stardust Hotel and Desert Inn Hotel Photographic Negatives collection consists of black-and-white photographic negatives depicting the Stardust and Desert Inn hotels from approximately 1962 to 1967. The images depict annual and one-time events held at both hotels, including sporting events such as golf and tennis, fashion shows and beauty contests, weddings, and conventions for local and national associations. A significant amount of the collection documents the long running Lido de Paris show at the Stardust. Also included in the collection are interior views of Stardust and Desert Inn casino floors, pool side lounges, and guest rooms, as well as exterior and aerial views of the hotel properties located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Abstract

The Benedict Family Papers materials date from roughly 1905-1998 and are comprised of correspondence and letters (1969-1971) written to Howard Hughes by the public. The collection also contains correspondence written to Robert Maheu, former chief executive of Nevada operations for Howard Hughes. The collection also includes a variety of casino and gambling related product catalogs, gaming guides for Las Vegas casinos, and of research papers and reports primarily relating to sports betting and cheating.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Frankie Perez conducted by Elsa Lopez and Laurents Bañuelos-Benitez on November 05th, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Perez speaks about the importance of sports, and the lack of Latinx representation in teachers during high school. Perez then discusses being placed on medical hold in the military, how his transition affected his physical tests, how the 2016 election may have impacted transgendered people in the military, and how everyday military personnel feel about transgendered people serving in the military. The interview concludes with Perez discussing the Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgendered, and Queer (LGBTQ) scene in Las Vegas, Nevada and about how culture impacts which clubs members of LBGTQ community would visit.

Oral history interview with Shirley and Mackie Edmond, Althia Taylor, and Larry McCollum conducted by Claytee D. White on May 30, 2021 for African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project.

Shirley, Althia, Mackie, and Larry discuss their experiences growing up and living in Las Vegas, Nevada including their respective employment histories; Shirley and Althia worked in the postal service for over 30 years, Mackie worked at the Stardust Hotel and Casino, and Larry mentored children as a sports coach for the Clark County School District (CCSD). The narrators talked about businesses that thrived on the Westside and ended their discussion with how COVID-19 has impacted their families and daily lives.
