To you, William D. Carlson, the first dean of our new found University, we dedicate this
1959 Epilogue. Busy as you have been, you are still known by the students for your earnest
and untiring support of student rights and activities of every nature. We appreciate
the privilege of studying and living a short part of our lives under your guidance. We will
all long remember you for your willingness to devote your time to hear our problems, your
smiling face, and your hearty laugh.
We wish to add this to the long lists of honors that you have earned but in such a manmer
that this honor will be everlasting. In retrospect, students will look back upon their
years at Nevada Southern with its new fouud traditions and legends with a sense of longing
and loyalty. You, although you may not always realize it, have contributed greatly to
this feeling. You represent the continuity of the generations of students that will pass
through this University for years to come. For all that you have done — thank you.

people o f southern Nevada. I n t h e beginning t h e r e were only two i n s t r u c t o r s teaching c l a s s e s i n t h e evenings
a t t h e Las Vegas High School b u t t h e outlook f o r t h e f u t u r e was g r e a t .
I n 1955, E s t e l l e and Howard Wilbourn donated t h e l a n d on which t o b u i l d a n i n s t i t u t i o n o f higher l e a r n i
n g . I n t h e s p r i n g o f t h a t y e a r a major d r i v e by t h e s t u d e n t s and educators o f southern Nevada was made
i n a n attempt t o r a i s e money t o h e l p e r e c t Nevada Southern's f i r s t b u i l d i n g .
P h i s hope i n t h e s t u d e n t ' s h e a r t s became a r e a l i t y on J u l y 1 , 1957, when t h e c o l l e g e moved i n t o t h e i r
f i r s t b u i l d i n g .
As ' h e r e g i s t r a t i o n r o s e , t h e groundbreaking f o r Nevada Southern's second b u i l d i n g took p l a c e May I I ,
1958. I n A p r i l o l 1959 t h i s second b u i l d i n g was completed and Nevada Southern was growing.

formed not only as a social group but a service group as well ... well noted for
their standing offer to aid any local service group.

BASKETBALL
This year saw the entrance of intercollegiate sports at Nevada
Southern. Games were played against Junior colleges
from Utah and California. Next year we will be engaged
with some four year schools from Colorado, California,
and possibly Hawaii.

It is interesting to imagine how some future Epilogue editor will scan the worn pages of one of this year's
4 copies in search of inspiration. In the weary quiet of early morning hours it may amuse him to see our antiquated
faces and funny dress. Our future to him will be a complex panorama — dated, catalogued, and filed away to add
a small part of the tradition to which he is accustomed and accepts without too much thought. It takes a moment of
reflection ta realize that what we have done — what we do — is a small bit of pioneering that will have effects on
many whom we shall never know nor they us. We have so much to occupy us in our immediate experiences that we
cannot imagine that the most important things in the world to us now will not remain. I sincerely hope that all of
you, my friends and classmates, will contemplate this record of our passing year with a broad perspective such as
our future editor might do and benefit from a new and stimulating sense of history and accomplishment reflected
in the pages.
