Abstract

The Sherwin "Scoop" Garside Papers comprise photographs and documents of Las Vegas Review-Journal writer and photographer Scoop Garside. The collection dates from 1930 to 1983 and includes publicity photos of the Old Spanish Trail, correspondence from the Nevada State Centennial Commission, history of mines (Tonopah, Goldfield, Bullfrog), copies of articles written by Garside, family photos and general photographs of people and places, negatives of Las Vegas, Nevada; Searchlight, Nevada; St. George, Utah; and several unlabeled negatives. The 2017 addition contains newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, Nevada Historical Quarterly, and information on Nevada historic preservation. There is also genealogical information on the Garside family.

Rex A. Bell Jr. oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Rex A. Bell Jr. conducted by Craig S. Klatt on March 01, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Bell discusses his movie star parents, growing up on his family ranch, and his education, from the 5th Street Grammar School to attending Notre Dame University. Bell also discusses his time living in Oregon and Southern Nevada, including his time working in a western clothing store in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bell also discusses social changes, as well as changes in policing styles over time.

Craig, Junior

Junior Craig was born around 1921. He moved from Los Angeles, California to Southern Nevada with his father on January 16, 1946 with trucks to work on the construction of Davis Dam. At the time, Craig worked as a trailer court operator. He also worked as a goldminer in Searchlight, Nevada for a couple of years. Craig was also an active member of the civil defense in Clark County, Nevada.

Tracht, Violet, 1910-2011

Violet L. Oppedy was born in Searchlight, Nevada on May 12, 1910. She grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada and graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1928. She married Dewitt Tracht and moved to Boulder City, Nevada and the couple owned and operated Central Market. She died on November 3, 2011.

Erle A. Taylor (1919-1996) served as the Director of Aviation for Clark County, Nevada in the 1970s and oversaw operations at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada as well as regional airports in Searchlight, Jean, and Overton, Nevada.

Thomas, Charles W., 1860-1937

Charles William Thomas was born July 29, 1860 in what would soon become Nevada. He and his family are known as early settlers in Nevada, and lived in various locations around Nevada including Beatty, Pioneer (near Goodsprings), and Searchlight, where he operated a merchantile store. Thomas became the postmaster of Pioneer, Nevada in October 1911. He died on August 16, 1937.
