Description

Oral history interview with Pablo Macias conducted by Elsa Lopez, Monserrath Hernandez, and Claytee D. White on December 07, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Pablo Macias was rasied in the small town of Carlin outside of Elko, Nevada. His father and mother met in Ogden, Utah where his father was working on railroad in Nevada and Utah. After finishing high school, he got a job at Elko Blacksmith Shop, where he learned to weld. After attending Northern Nevada Community College, he enrolled and graduated from UNR. After graduation, he took a position at Von Tobel Middle School in 1990 teaching Spanish and Physical Education. While working as a Spanish teacher in Rancho High School he enrolled in a Master's program at Nova Southeastern University, completing the program in education administration. He currently serves as the Associate Director of Corporate Work Study Program Operations for Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory High School. Subjects discussed include: Education, Rancho High School, Von Tobel Middle School, Barrick Mining, and Cristo Rey.

Description

Photograph of a meeting held by the Salvation Army asking individuals from the local community for funding. This meeting is being held in the compound of a local Japanese community center that is now a city hall in California. This origional Japanese community center was established by the LA, SL, and the San Pedro Railroad Company and was able to house up to one hundred people. Some identified individuals are first row: Henry Sakai, Frank Sakai, Nanyu Tomiyasu, Murata, Kiyo Tomiyasu, Alice Sakai, Uwamie, Mabel Sakai. Second row: Otohei Nasu, Karasu Maru,Tom Sakai, Mr. Enomoto, Tom Tomiyasu, Maymie, Mrs. Tom Sakai. Third row: Mrs. Enomoto, Mrs. Nasu, Mrs. Toyono Tomiyasu. Fourth row: Mr. Murata, Mr. Sayano and Mrs. Murata.

The Clark County High School girls' team is posing with their ball for a black and white photograph on the stairs of the school. Later the school was renamed Las Vegas High School. The girl holding the ball is identified as Louella Wengert (Ham). In the first row left to right are: Wanda Ball (Moser), Florence Bishop, Louella Wengert (Ham), Gladys Boggs (Marshall), Martha Kramer (her father was a barber). In the second row left to right are: Etta McDonald, Clara Kiernan, Teacher, Rose Coughlin (Ullom) -- her father was a railroad man and Olive Lake (Eglington). Abstract

The Elton and Madelaine Garrett Photograph and Architectural Drawing Collection contains photographic prints and architectural drawings of Boulder (Hoover) Dam; Las Vegas, Nevada; Boulder City, Nevada; and other locations in the American Southwest from approximately 1927 to 1990. The photographs primarily depict Hoover Dam's construction and areas around Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, and Boulder City during the 1930s and 1940s. The bulk of the architectural drawings and maps are projects and diagrams related to the planning and development of Boulder City, Nevada between 1943 and 1985.
