Donna Andress Papers

Abstract

The Donna Andress Papers (1890-2021) contain the personal papers of Donna Andress, a longtime resident and activist in Southern Nevada. Materials include correspondence and newspaper clippings from the Nevada Welfare Committee, on which Andress served as chairperson during the 1970s, in addition to pamphlets and newsletters from various Nevada historical organizations and committees. The papers reflect her involvement with community organizations throughout Southern Nevada.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Jane Overy conducted by Claytee D. White on August 17 and December 20, 2023 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Overy discusses her museum work, early life, and many civic projects she has participated in over the years. Overy grew up in Kansas, where she spent time playing pool (billards) and spending time outdoors. After high school, she joined the United States Air Force and served in Alaska where there were two women, each with a private guard. Additionally, she worked as a newspaper reporter and as an entertainer who sang around the world. Overy served in the military for four years. In 1981, she moved to Nevada and desert climate for the improvement of her overall health. Over the years, her work and civic projects connected her with Senator Harry Reid, the Walking Box Ranch, the Searchlight Nugget Casino, and many other experiences.

Scope and Contents

The National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Joint Task Force files (1995-2002) document the task force’s efforts to regulate Native American gaming. The materials in this subseries document institutional and political approaches to Native American gaming and national legislation about Native American sovereignty and civil rights. Materials include socioeconomic reports, correspondence, memos, court opinions, newsletters, periodicals, notes, agendas, press releases, proposals to amend the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), journal articles, and newspaper articles. The materials document IGRA amendments, the Enzi amendment, and California gaming.

Additional materials relating to NCAI can be found in the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) subject files located in general subject files. Materials directly related to Spilde’s activities as a member of the task force were placed in the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Joint Task Force files. Other materials about NCAI were placed in the NCAI subject files or the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Data Management, Needs Assessment, and Auditing Workgroup files.
