Abstract

The collection (approximately 1940s-1970s) is comprised primarily of personal and professional photographs, ephemera, and scrapbooks of steel guitar player Beryl Harrell who performed with different musical acts in California and Nevada throughout the 1940s to the 1960s. There are a number of personal photographs of Beryl's family, namely her son, Don Triolo. The collection includes an optical disc with five recordings of Harrell playing the steel guitar for different musical acts. The collection also contains clippings and magazine articles about Harrell's life and career.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Arno Marsh conducted by Lisa Gioia-Acres on September 08, 2008 for the All That Jazz Oral History Project. Marsh moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1957. After transferring into the Las Vegas union in 1959, he signed on to perform with Charlie Ventura at the old Thunderbird Hotel. Marsh recalls playing at several different hotels on the Las Vegas strip as well as sharing the stage with a number of famous entertainers in the business. His recollections span several decades and cover a variety of topics related to the Las Vegas jazz scene.

Oral history interview with Charlie McLean conducted by Lisa Gioia-Acres on December 14, 2007 for the All That Jazz Oral History Project. McLean discusses making a living playing for the Ice Capades—traveling entertainment shows featuring theatrical ice skating performances—and in jazz bands after graduating from college. He also discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1960 and playing at hotels such as the Frontier, Desert Inn, Riviera, Sahara, and the Tropicana.
