Abstract

Oral history interviews with Renee Diamond conducted by Caryll Batt Dziedziak on November 17, 1997, November 20, 1997, November 27, 1997, and November 30, 1997 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. Diamond begins her interviews describing her childhood and young adult life in Los Angeles, California. Diamond then discusses her interest in organizing, which started with the Rumford Fair Housing Act campaign. Diamond talks about continuing her activism with the Women's Democratic Club in Las Vegas, Nevada after she moved there in 1972. Diamond discusses Las Vegas in the 1970s, the activist community at the time, Ruby Duncan, and the importance of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Diamond goes on to describe the ERA extensively, including the benefits of passing the ERA, campaigns and challenges specific to Nevada, and locals involved in the efforts. Diamond also talks about working with the National Organization of Women (NOW), and her presidency in the Women's Democratic Club.

Christian Giovanni oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Christian Giovanni conducted by Cecilia Winchell, Jerwin Tiu, and Stefani Evans on May 17, 2022 for the Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Giovanni describes her early life being born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. She discusses her mother, Oywan, who first worked for the casinos before turning her focus to community building. Throughout Oywan's life, she did everything from start the first temple in the city to the first Thai newspaper, Las Vegas News. Giovanni mentions having what she considers a normal childhood, especially because of her more Western appearance, and did not embrace her AAPI identity until much later in life after she started helping her mother with different organizations. Currently, Giovanni is involved in many organizations, from the AAPI County Commission to the Thai Culture Foundation.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Sandra Blake Toles conducted by Claytee D. White on November 13, 2018 and November 28, 2018 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In the first interview, Toles discusses her early life in Enid, Oklahoma and growing up in a family of ten children. She talks about her father being an ordained bishop in the Pentecostal Church, the significance of religion in her family, and the religious community she grew up in. Toles remembers her husband’s service in the United States Air Force, being stationed at Nellis Air force Base in 1966, and purchasing their first home in Las Vegas, Nevada. Later, Toles describes the Westside community during the 1970s, and her involvement with the Las Vegas City government. In the final interview, Toles discusses local initiative programs that work towards alleviating crime, assist mothers on welfare, housing assistance, and develop employment training and opportunities for community members.
