Abstract

Oral history interview with Cecelia Zamora and Celia Rivero Mummey conducted by Claytee D. White on January 15, 2022 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Celia Rivero Mummey is the mother of Cecelia Zamora, and both participate in this interview. Both were born in Las Vegas, Nevada and Mummey recalls the Helldorado Parades as her favorite part of the city. Mummey's mother and father - Margarita and Francisco - owned the first Mexican restaurant in the city. Frank's Cafe was located at Fremont and First Streets. The interview covers memories of other downtown business locations, cruising on Fremont Street, outings to Lake Mead, living in Vegas Heights, Culinary Union membership, working in various hotels, and Las Vegas entertainment.

Oral history interview with Marie McMillan conducted by Kelli Luchs on September 15, 2009, September 23, 2009 October 01, 2009, and November 24, 2009 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Marie McMillan discusses life during the Great Depression and World War II. She then talks about marrying Duke Daly, raising a family with him, Daly passing away, moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1961, and working at the Nevada Test Site. She then discusses being a single mother, marrying James McMillan, and her great passion for aviation. She also talks about her role as a leader in the African American community and her flying records.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Ericka Rodriguez and Jose Orozco conducted by Claytee D. White on December 21, 2017 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. In this interview, Ericka Rodriguez and Jose Orozco recount their experience of the October 1, 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple provide a step-by-step account of what happened on that Sunday night and how they made it to safety. They discuss what has changed in their lives and within themselves after the shooting, Orozco mentioning a greater awareness of his surroundings and Rodriguez speaking about her survivor's guilt. The two interviewees talk about their feelings regarding the life-threatening event as well as the renewed sense of community they have gained.

Handwritten inscription with photo reads: "15' x 3' white washed rocks spell PAHRUMP, a 99's project to identify locations for flyers on the Dorothy ranch in Pahrump. The 99's were guests at our house with the planes tied down on our runway. That sign helped many planes to locate themselves. Dale's "ham" shortwave [was] the only communication in the valley." On March 15, 1976, Stephen Kalish interviewed Alfred “Al” Isola (born August 3rd, 1917 in Oakland, California) in his office about his garbage company and early Southern Nevada. The two discuss Las Vegas’ lack of a unified garbage system and how dumping sites have had to adjust their practices in order to limit their impact on pollution. Isola also explains the different disposal protocols for wet and dry trash. On the second tape of the interview, an unidentified woman enters the conversation.

Dr. Jeffers discusses her work as the student and faculty counselor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The two also discuss some of the hardships of living in a desert, as well Dr. Jeffers’ plans to move into private psychiatric practice.

Frances Harelik interviews IBM computer engineer Paul Bowerman in Las Vegas at Harelik’s home. Born in Wolforth, Texas in 1929, Mr. Bowerman relocated to Nevada in 1954. Other places Mr. Bowerman has lived include: California, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, New York, Minnesota, England, and Japan. From Mr. Bowerman’s perspective this interview provides insight into life in Las Vegas from 1954 to 1976.

Linda Rivera oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Linda Rivera conducted by Layne Karafantis on October 02, 2009 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. Rivera opens her interview by discussing her youth as a Latina in Arizona in the 1960s. Rivera then talks about schooling conditions and discrimination. She describes her first job at the Solomon Bill School District and, while there were many Hispanic students, there were not many Hispanic teachers or student leaders. Rivera then describes moving to Nevada in 1986 and searching for Hispanic culture in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rivera discusses the formation of the Hispanic Roundtable, an organization that develops Hispanic leadership in Nevada. She also talks her work to make the Clark County School District more accessible to working families and her awards and recognition within the Latinx community.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Irene Porter conducted by Angela Moor on November 06, 2009, November 20, 2009, and January 29, 2010 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. Porter begins her interview discussing her childhood in North Dakota in the 1940s including her experiences growing up on military bases and her father's military career. Porter then discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1959 and her experiences at Rancho High School. Porter describes her classes, social activities, and community. Porter then talks about her career and experiences at the Clark County Planning Department including the activities the Department was responsible for, learning to write grants, the glass ceiling, and how she eventually became Director. Porter goes on to discuss working for the City of North Las Vegas and lobbying for the state of Nevada.
