Engel, Jerry, 1930-

Jerry Engel was born in 1930 in New Jersey and spent most of his early life in Long Beach, New York until the family moved westward to Los Angeles in 1945. Jerry is a retired Certified Public Accountant and loves to talk about the history of Las Vegas that he observed since arriving in 1953. That was the year that he moved to Las Vegas to join his older brothers, Morris and Phil, in their accounting firm. Their major client at the time was Desert Inn.

Description

Photographs and correspondence document the history of Temple Beth Sholom, including the ground breaking and construction of the campus in Summerlin. Also included in this set of images are photographs of Rita Deanin Abbey fabricating the Wall of Creation installation for the Temple on Oakey Boulevard in the 1970s.

May, Rick L.

Rick May is a gay activist and mental health advocate in and around Las Vegas. He was born on May 30, 1952 in Amherst, Texas. His family owned a ranch in Sudan, Texas. After graduating, he moved around Texas for some years before moving to Las Vegas in 1982. He then became an active member of the LGBTQ+ community in Las Vegas, organizing many Pride events and eventually opening his own business, R and R Sundries.

Hiatt, Hermi Dierauer, 1942-

Biologist Hermi Dierauer Hiatt was born on September 12, 1942. She was involved with the Red Rock Audubon Society, helped create maps for Southern Nevada, and assisted in establishing boundaries for the sale of public lands.

Guinn, Diane, 1949-

Diane Guinn was a State of Nevada Division of State Welfare and Supportive Services worker who worked assisted Ruby Duncan in developing Operation Life in 1972, a nonprofit organization that promoted welfare reform in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born on April 5, 1949 in Seattle, Washington, and later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1952. Her mother, Louise Canon, was a cashier in restaurants and a manager in dress stores, while her father, Doug Canon, was a bartender. Guinn married Frank Guinn, an electrical foreman, on 1972 in Las Vegas.

From the Las Vegas Bugle Photograph Collection on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History (PH-00336). "Wall of Dedication" at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center, 912 E. Sahara Ave., Las Vegas. Each brick of the wall has a plaque to reflect a donation. "Becky" is the chairperson for the wall project.
