The black and white, aerial view of Howard Hughes' Lockheed 14 aircraft performing its final landing on the Round the World flight at Floyd Bennett Airport, New York. Typed onto a piece of paper attached to the image: "All Roads Lead to Field as Hughes Arrives, New York City: This striking air-view shows the thousands of cars lined up at Floyd Bennett Field, July 14th, after they had disgorged their occupants who took part in the great ovation accorded Howard Hughes and his gallant crew of four as they arrived at the end of their record-smashing flight around the world. Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering Records

Abstract

The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering Records contain materials dating from approximately 1968 to 2017 that document the establishment of the School of Engineering and later the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering School. Materials include records of the Nevada Development Authority Partners for Industry through Engineering and Education (PiE2) program during the 1980s that was headed by Bob Gore of Summa Corporation (formerly known as the Howard Hughes Corporation). Collection records also include samples of class listings, phone directories, degree information, college rules and bylaws, and fact sheets and brochures for different engineering degree programs at UNLV. Materials also include accreditation questionnaires from 1989, 1990, and 1992. Also included are promotional brochures and pamphlets for the school from 2015 to 2017.

Transcribed from press release attached to back of photo: "NEW PHOTO PLANE TEST-FLOWN CULVER CITY, California, July 7 -- Howard Hughes, who designed and built the new FX-11 reconnaissance plane in conjunction with Air Materiel Command engineers, sits in the pilot's bubble-glass canopy preparing for the first test flight. One of the world's fastest long-range photo planes, the XF-11 can attain a speed of more than 400 miles per hour, Army officials said. It is powered by two 3000-horsepower radial engines with eight-bladed contra-rotating propellers. Outstanding features include a full-span flap, unique eight-camera layout, and exceptionally fast take-off." Transcribed from photo sleeve: "Howard Hughes sits in the cockpit of the XF-11, a reconnaissance plane that Hughes built and designed in conjunction with Air Materiel Command engineers. Hughes is preparing for his first test flight in Culver City, California July 7, 1947.
