Kaufman, Bernard, 1939-

Bernard Kaufman was born on June 29, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri to Rose and Charles Kaufman. He married Barbara Kaufman on March 26, 1961. n 1968, they moved to Las Vegas, joining Bernie’s brother, Herb, in the growing city who had opened the first Wonder World store. Bernie assisted in managing the family businesses four Wonder World stores, until they were sold in 1982. At that time, he went into the car rental business, which he sold in 2000 and then went into airport advertising. Bernard and Barbara have two children, Carrie and Andrew Kaufman.

Rosencrantz, Arne, 1947-

Arne Rosencrantz was born on September 27, 1947 in Longview, Washington. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1952 and graduated from Las Vegas High School. He grew up in the dense Mormon population of the John S. Park Neighborhood. Rosencrantz attended Nevada Southern University, now known as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). In 1967, Rosencrantz began working at Garrett's Furniture and in 1979, he purchased the company and became its president.

Figler, Dayvid, 1967-

Dayvid Figler was born August 18, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. He was four years old when the family station wagon reached Las Vegas, Nevada in 1971. Figler’s father soon became a Pan dealer on the Strip. As the family grew, his mother, Barbara, immersed her energies in her children’s activities, Hadassah and Temple Beth Sholom. Figler graduated from Valley High School at the age of 16 and by the age of 23 he was rising in the legal world. He was also a local essayist and poet.

Sidney, Corinne, 1937-

Corrine Sidney was born on April 13, 1937. She attended the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, Los Angeles. Corrine Sidney was an actress, a Las Vegas, Nevada showgirl, and a television talk show host and gossip columnist in Los Angeles, California. She was married to Jack Entratter who produced Las Vegas shows and later to movie director George Sidney.

List, Kathy

Kathryn Sue List was born Kathryn Sue Geary on April 7, 1940. She married Robert List on July 1, 1962. The couple had three chidren during their marriage: Suzanne, Hank, and Michelle. While her husband was governor of Nevada (1978-1983), Kathryn was First Lady of Nevada. She later divorced Robert List. She currently lives in Reno, Nevada and works as a realtor.

Dr. James B. McMillan oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. James B. McMillan conducted by Perry Kaufman on April 14, 1972 for the UNLV University Libraries Oral History Project. In the interview, McMillan discusses his childhood in Aberdeen, Mississippi and his parents' experience with racial discrimination. He then talks about his own experiences with racial discrimination while living in Las Vegas, Nevada. McMillan recalls his involvement with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the tension between community leaders and local politicians including Pat McCarran and John Russell. McMillan discusses integration and white power structures and how they affect the Black community in Las Vegas. Lastly, he discusses his relationship with other Black activists and figures in the community, including Dr. Charles West, Bob Bailey, Lubertha Johnson, and Mabel Hoggard.

Description

This photograph has three images. The first one, (0272_0008), is a newspaper photo and the headline reads "Workers Receive Last Paychecks." The caption reads, "With its contract fulfilled the Six Companies Corporation turned Boulder Dam over to the government yesterday. Workmen on the project are showing receiving their last paychecks as the engineering concern closed books. Some 1600 men will remain as government employees." The second one, (0272_0009) rotated to the right, shows a Mess Hall for Six Companies employees. It reads, "The best of meals were served three times a day, and when each shift starts down to work, all the sandwiches you can carry plus drinks $1.75 a day with room. Entrance on right is celebrity dining room where lots of movie stars had dinner. Clara Bow came often. She and husband had a ranch nearby. (Bell Ranch)," as a handwritten inscription. The third one (0272_0010) that's upside down, shows a Motor transport (150 men), Boulder Dam. (U.S. Bureau of Reclamation photo). It reads, "Too tired and sleepy to want anything but a shower and bed," as a handwritten inscription.
