Description

Interview with William H. Bailey conducted by Betty Rosenthal on March 16, 1978. Arriving in Las Vegas in 1955, Bailey became an assistant producer and master of ceremonies in the first interracial hotel in Nevada, the Moulin Rouge, and subsequently worked in radio and television. Bailey reflects on the history of discrimination in Las Vegas and its impact on the entertainment industry. Bailey's wife Anna was the first black girl dancer on the Strip in the 1961 production, "Nymphs of the Nile." Appointed by Governor Grant Sawyer to the Nevada State Equal Rights Investigatory Commission in 1961, Bailey served as its chairman and traveled throughout the state holding hearings. He describes his work on the commission and how discrimination in housing personally affected him.

Description

Photographs and correspondence document the history of Temple Beth Sholom, including the ground breaking and construction of the campus in Summerlin. Also included in this set of images are photographs of Rita Deanin Abbey fabricating the Wall of Creation installation for the Temple on Oakey Boulevard in the 1970s.

Kirshbaum, Irving, 1909-1980

Irving Kirshbaum (1909-1980) worked for Willie Alderman and Dave Berman at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1955 until the 1970s. Kirshbaum was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and lived in Los Angeles, California before he moved to Las Vegas in 1955. He worked as a "box man and a floor man" at the Riviera.

Straus, David, 1964-

David Straus was born November 11, 1964 in Las Vegas, Nevada to Joyce Straus, an artist, and Neil Straus, a doctor. After graduating from Clark High School, he attended the University of Arizona and then Whittier Law School. Straus built a successful legal career focused on estate planning, asset protection and charitable planning.

Willis, Shawn, 1972-

Shawn Willis grew up outside of Detroit, Michigan and a graduate of University of Detroit Mercy. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2004. Since moving she converted to judaism. She held the position of Director of the Jewish National Fund of Las Vegas from 2015 to 2017. She also has been a member of UNLV Foundation’s President’s Associates Council.

Donald Klinkner was born on November 28, 1935. He arrived in Nevada in November of 1950. He has worked at and managed various casinos. He married Kathleen Klinkner on April 15, 1983.
