Description

A postcard of the Grant Party at the mines in Virginia City, Nevada October 28, 1879. The people in the photo are identified on the postcard as: Mr. J.W. Mackay, Mrs. M.G. Gillette, Mr. U.S. Grant Jr., Mrs. U.S. Grant, General U.S. Grant, S. Yamada, Mrs. J.G. Fair, Governor J.H. Kinkead, and Colonel J.G. Fair. The postcard is stamped July 1, 1930 in Carson City, Nevada. The postcard's inscription reads, "Hello Pals, saw Mary and Glenn yesterday, they both are fine. Hope you are both well and doing a big business. Regards to family, Busher." It was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Stocker Las Vegas, Nevada Northern Hotel.

In this recorded KNPR documentary, Mississippi of the West or Promised Land, the narrator discusses a racially-segregated Las Vegas, Nevada, maltreatment of black performers prior to 1947, Jim Crow laws during World War II, refusal of hotel owners to abolish the color line, desegreation of most hotels in 1960, modern remnants of historically black neighborhoods, police department—black community tensions in these neighborhoods, and furthering of race relations in Las Vegas.

Bell, a native of Amargosa Valley, Nevada, first took an EMS course at Battle Mountain in 1987. He completed paramedic training in Winnemucca and Carson City in 1995. He became commander of the Battle Mountain ambulance service in 2012.
