Description

Black and white image of men standing next to"cover wagons" in Boulder City. Nine cover wagons, each having a capacity of 48 men, were used to transport workmen from Boulder City to Black Canyon for the construction of the Hoover Dam. These buses were canvas-covered with side curtains that could be raised during hot weather. Note: Boulder Dam was officially renamed Hoover Dam in 1947.

The view of Scotty's Castle and guest houses in Death Valley, California. The hottest place on Earth, Death Valley is located between California and Nevada. Located within the far northern region of Death Valley in Grapevine Canyon, the Death Valley Ranch, more commonly known as Scotty's Castle, is a prime example of Spanish-Mediterranean styling during the Roaring '20s and Depression '30s. Scotty's Castle was constructed by Albert Johnson with the help of Death Valley Scotty during the Great Depression, but because the men began to build onto federal land, construction was forced to a halt. To this day, Scotty's Castle remains incomplete. Transcribed onto the bottom border of the image: "Scotty's Castle And Guest House; Death Valley, Calif. Frashers Foto - Pomona."

Description

A colored postcard showing an artist's representation of the downstream face of Hoover Dam and the Lake Mead Recreational Area in Black Canyon. Constructed in the 1930s, Hoover Dam crosses the Colorado River on the state line between Arizona and Nevada. Also considered to be an engineering wonder and the world's largest dam during its time of construction, Hoover Dam provides much-needed irrigation and hydroelectric power to the Southwest region of the United States. From this angle, intake towers can be seen sticking out of Lake Mead, along with the U-shaped power house at the base of the dam. Transcribed onto the bottom of the image: "Lake Mead Recreational Area."

A black and white image of Las Vegas Rotary Club members at a Christmas party in Las Vegas. The group is in front of the Apache Hotel. Club President A.C. Grant is seated beside a waving Santa Claus in an automobile bearing a sign that reads: "Rotary Xmas Party." Secretary Bryan L. Bunker is standing second from the right in the first row. This photo was taken from a time capsule in the cornerstone of the Union Pacific Railroad station located in Las Vegas. The time capsule was placed there in 1940 and was later retrieved when the building was demolished around 1970.
