Abstract

The collection consists of letters, greeting cards, survey maps, newspaper clippings, legal papers, photographs, collected recipes, land sales and expense journals, and survey reference books. The material was created or collected by pioneering Nevada surveyor, engineer, and real estate entrepreneur J. T. (John Thomas) McWilliams and his wife, Iona, between 1900 and 1968.

Abstract

The Beckley Family Photograph Collection (approximately 1891-1982) consists of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives and color photographic slides. The images depict the Beckley family, their businesses in southern Nevada, and Las Vegas, Nevada as the city developed during the first half of the twentieth century. Also included are images of airplanes at the first Las Vegas airport Anderson Field, later renamed Rockwell Field in 1925, Fremont Street in Las Vegas, and postcards of mining towns across southern Nevada.

Scope and Contents

Materials contain photographs from the Kiel (Taylor) Ranch from 1964, including photographs of the ranch, John Park's house, and other buildings. The Kiel Ranch was one of earliest non-indigenous settlements in the Las Vegas Valley, and it has become infamous as the site of the murders of Ed and William Kiel committed in 1900. The ranch is now in North Las Vegas and is administered by the North Las Vegas Neighborhood and Leisure Services Department.

Oral history interview with Muriel Euchner conducted by A. D. Hopkins on December 26, 1980 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Euchner discusses what it’s like being part of the “lost generation” of Tonopah, Nevada and her life as child there in the early 1900s.
