Abstract

The Thomas P. O'Farrell Papers (1900-1999) are comprised of scientific reports collected by Thomas O’Farrell over the course of his career studying wildlife ecology, particularly its connection to nuclear radiation. Materials include original, reprinted, and photocopied editions of scientific reports on animal and plant life around the world, focusing primarily on the Mojave and Great Basin Deserts, Alaska, Washington, and the Pacific Ocean. Reports come from institutions including the Desert Research Institute (DRI), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA), and the United States Department of Energy (DOE), as well as affiliated universities.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. Jacob Paz conducted by Claytee D. White on September 15, 2014 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Paz discusses growing up in Israel and obtaining a green card to attend New York University in 1974. He then talks about his sense of community within the Jewish part of Las Vegas, Nevada and his affirmations on the Holocaust.

Abstract

The Reynolds Electrical and Engineering Photograph Collection contains black-and-white photographs of locations on or near the Nevada Test Site (NTS) from 1963 to 1965 as documented by the Nevada Test Site News from 1963 to 1981. The collection includes photographs of Cat Canyon, Native American artifacts, cabins formerly occupied by prospectors and miners, caves, the town of Rhyolite, Nevada, buildings for the set of the film The Reward, Wahmonie Mining District, and White Rock Spring.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Paul Sorensen conducted by Bill Friday on February 27, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Sorensen discusses the history of Clark County and Las Vegas, Nevada. Sorensen discusses education in Las Vegas, reasons for the growth of Clark County, and the establishment of the Nevada Test Site. Sorensen later describes how Las Vegas and its school system has changed, and discusses who he believes are moving to live in Las Vegas the most. Sorensen goes on to discuss racial segregation in Las Vegas and racial integration in the schools via busing.

Scope and Contents

The series is comprised of archived captures of websites and social media sites related to the October 1, 2017 mass shooting that occurred at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. UNLV Libraries Special Collections and Archives staff selected websites that represent immediate news coverage of the event from established and alternative news media. The majority of content on these sites is comprised of articles and news stories from local, national, and international news media outlets. Established news media sources include the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Las Vegas Sun, Fox News, The New York Times, and CNN. Alternative news media sources include the Las Vegas Weekly, Buzzfeed, and Truthfeed News. Websites and social media sites were also selected based on the most frequently shared URLs on Twitter related to the shooting in Las Vegas. The websites in this collection were crawled and captured using Archive-It from October 2017 to October 2018.
