Abstract

Oral history interview with Ken Frejlach conducted by Chuck Williams on January 21, 2015 for the Friends of Red Rock Canyon in Nevada Oral History Project. Frejlach begins the interview by talking about his family life and how they started working on Oliver Ranch near Blue Diamond, Nevada. He describes their duties while working and the Carole Lombard plane crash site. Frejlach also talks about his mother's medical illness. He talks about his move the town of Blue Diamond, and describes his time there attending school. Lastly, he speaks more about the Oliver Ranch property.

Description

Mike Gordon speaks about their liquor stores and lists his occupation as a bartender. Among the civic organizations that he participated in were: Young Democrats, Eagles Lodge, Lions Club, past president of Temple Beth Sholom and B'nai B'rith Lodge. Together Mike and Sallie recall the growth and changes of the valley they have witnessed between the early 1930s and mid-1970s. Among his anecdotes is one about the carrying of payroll checks to Boulder Dam to avoid "interference" (robberies).

Mike and Sallie were among the very first people of Jewish ancestry to make their way to Las Vegas. They arrived January 26, 1932 to join relatives of Sallie?s who had moved to Las Vegas when the Boulder Dam construction began. They had married in 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Soon they were involved members of a small but growing group of Jewish pioneers and helped found Temple Beth Sholom, the community?s first synagogue. Mike speaks about their liquor stores and lists his occupation as a bartender. The Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development (HPAIED) files document the HPAIED’s efforts to research the socioeconomic impacts of Native American gaming from 1990 to 2010, with the bulk of materials dating from 2000 to 2005. The materials in this subseries document Dr. Spilde’s research while working for the HPAIED, offering valuable insight into the administration of the organization. The subseries includes materials collected by Dr. Spilde about HPAIED, the ᏣᎳᎩᎯ ᎠᏰᎵ (Cherokee Nation), the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, and the Mvskoke (Muscogee [Creek] Nation). Also included are socioeconomic reports, NIGA reports, site visit reports, notes, HPAIED studies, essays, “Honoring Nations” HPAIED awards program materials, Harvard University promotional materials, research proposals, Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association materials, census data, bibliographies, informational booklets and packets, conference materials, and newspaper articles.
