UNLV Libraries Collection on Casino Game Management

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection on Casino Game Management is comprised of management training guides and manuals used in casino management and operations dating from 1982 to 1999 from different hotel casinos primarily from Las Vegas, Nevada. Guides and manuals cover topics such as casino floor supervision and dealer/staff training for table games. The collection includes published guides as well as internal casino procedural manuals and employee handbooks from hotels such as Circus Circus, Mandalay Bay, the Monte Carlo, the Rio, and Harrah's (Laughlin, NV).

Description

Interviewed by David Schwartz. Russell Terbeek born in Cleveland in 1956. He was going to be a sound tech or a lighting tech for bands after college, but his contact person for that industry disappeared. His uncle was a bell captain at Circus Circus, so he told Russell about their dealer program, and Russell came to Las Vegas to be in it. Russell worked for Circus Circus in various properties in Las Vegas and Laughlin for fifteen years. After he went to the Edgewater in Laughlin, he became back-up shift boss. At the Rio he was the table games division training manager. Russell also worked at the Treasure Island, Harrah's, and the Sahara. He helped open New York-New York in 1997. At one point he moved in with a woman who lived in Rancho Cucamonga, so he helped open the Pala Casino and worked as shift manager there and as table games manager at the Soboba Casino. Russell also worked at Harrah's Kansas City and Harrah's North Kansas City. At the time of the interview, he worked at Arizona Charlie's Boulder Casino. The Joan Kane Collection of Casino Training Manuals (approximately 1980-1999) contains various human resource training manuals for Atlantic City, New Jersey properties (Playboy Casino, Atlantis, Golden Nugget), Las Vegas, Nevada properties (Fremont Casino, Stratosphere, New York New York, Planet Hollywood) Circus Circus in Mississippi, and various riverboat gaming locales. Of note is a the Playboy Bunny club training manual, UNLV gaming training workshop, and some general manuals related to how to respond to potential labor strikes.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Freddie Sarno conducted by David Schwartz on February 09, 2010 for the Remembering Jay Sarno Oral History Project. In this interview, Sarno discusses his earliest recollections in Las Vegas, Nevada and the lifestyle he had growing up. He talks about the divorce of his parents, living in a Circus Circus Hotel and Casino suite, and the initial planning for The Grandissimo. Lastly, Sarno describes his father’s legacy in Las Vegas and his passing in 1984.

Interviewed by David Schwartz. Clifford Conedy played on the football team at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, beginning in 1973. The university got him a job working security as part of the youth patrol at Circus Circus Hotel-Casino. He lived in Washington State and came back to Las Vegas in 1977 and worked security for the Fremont Hotel and Casino and for the Stardust. He became a dealer for the Fremont and also worked for Little Caesars Casino, the Mint Hotel and Casino, El Rancho, the Imperial Palace, the MGM Grand, the Flamingo Hilton, and Casesars Palace.
